How Are Dead People Liking Stuff on Facebook?Have you noticed your friends liking stuff on Facebook that you know they don’t like? Yes? No? Well, have you seen some people like stuff on Facebook even though they’re… dead? It’s happening. And it’s because of a weird underworld of fake Facebook Likes.

Read Write took a look at the odd phenomenon of fake or accidental likes, showing countless examples of people claiming they’ve never liked a company or brand even though Facebook showed them as ‘Liking’ it. Facebook says these fake Likes aren’t fake at all but rather “accidental” mistakes, possibly done by “inadvertently pressing a button, perhaps on the mobile app.” I guess. Maybe it’s a good time to audit all your Facebook Likes to see if any rogue Likes happened to you.

How Are Dead People Liking Stuff on Facebook? But how does that explain people who’ve passed away still liking things after they’ve been, well, dead? The picture above shows a zombie Like.

A Facebook spokesman says the “likes” from dead people can happen if an account doesn’t get “memorialized” (meaning someone informs Facebook that the account-holder has died). If nobody tells Facebook that the account-holder is dead, Facebook just keeps operating on the assumption the person is alive.

Papa John's Faces $250 Million Lawsuit Over SMS SpamPapa John’s has clearly been a little over-eager with its digital promotion. Now, it’s facing a $250 million class-action lawsuit over all the spammy text messages it’s been sending you and everybody else around the US.

It’s alleged that Papa John’s sent 500,000 unwanted messages in early 2010, CNN Money reports. It gets worse: at times, customers were receiving 15 texts in a row, even in the middle of the night. Nobody needs a pizza offer that badly.

Of course, those texts were actually sent through a third-party text messaging service—in this case one called OnTime4U—so both companies will find themselves in the dock. And it could prove costly: the plaintiffs in the case are seeking damages of $500 per text. Think of all the pizza you could buy with that. [CNN Money]

Facebook Already Killed Its New 'Find Friends Nearby' Feature That Found People Around YouFacebook was stealth testing a new ‘Find Friends Nearby’ feature over the weekend that would show the Facebook users who were around you—think Find My Friends on iOS or Where You At? on Boost Mobile—but has now pulled the feature completely.

The service was admittedly half-baked, there was no official announcement about the Find Friends Nearby and when we tried playing around with it on our phones, we found nobody near us. Facebook told Wired that Find Friends Nearby wasn’t actually intended to launch. Specifically Facebook said:

“This wasn’t a formal release—this was just something that a few engineers were testing. With all tests, some get released as full products, others don’t. Nothing more to say on this for now, but we’ll communicate to everyone when there is something to say.”

Looks like we’ll have to wait a little bit longer to creep on Facebook users in our vicinity. [Wired]

We live in a big world filled with billions of people. It’s hard to believe you can make a dent. It’s hard to believe anything you can do will be remembered. It’s easier to say something is impossible, or at least extremely unlikely. Maybe it is a little delusional to believe you can make a mark on the world in spite of possibility. Then again, nobody who made a mark gave up that hope. Everyone had periods of doubts. Everyone considers giving up sometimes, but then you just have to remember why you tried so hard in the first place. Impossible is your own fabrication, or a thought you’ve inherited from someone else. Ultimately, you decide what’s impossible, and therefore nothing has to be.

Mobile Advertising Comes Of Age

millennial media ad impressionsMillennial Media, a mobile advertising network, filed for an IPO last week. We were waiting for this, as we’d predicted this would happen this year (though we didn’t think it would happen so soon).

How is Millennial Media’s business?

Pretty good, actually.

Here are the highlights:

  • The company generated $70 million in revenue in the first nine months of 2011, from just $6.2 million in 2008;
  • The company has never had a profitable quarter and is still losing money, $4 million for the first nine months of 2011.
  • It’s pretty big and growing pretty fast: it processed 40 billion ad impressions in December 2011, and impressions are growing fast (see chart); Millennial Media has 16.7% marketshare according to IDC.

The Business

millennial media revenues and lossesYou’ll almost certainly see plenty of headlines about Millennial “never turning in a profit” throughout its road show. That’s correct. It’s also irrelevant.

Millennial is growing fast and into an enormous market opportunity–mobile advertising. It should not be profitable. Gartner thinks mobile advertising will be a $20.6 billion market by 2015, which may be conservative. That’s the opportunity Millennial is going after.

What’s more, Millennial Media seems to be gaining both market and operating leverage.

millennial media advertisersMillennial Media’s gross margin, which is roughly the amount it keeps after payments to publishers, improved from 34% to 39% in the first nine months of 2011 compared to the same period in 2010. This is happening as Millennial is growing both advertisers and spending per advertisers, as you can see in the chart at right.

What’s more, Millennial’s losses are narrowing, as you can see in the chart above.

All of this suggests that Millennial is gaining both market leverage–as it gets more established it can keep more of the revenue it generates for publishers–and operating leverage–gaining operational efficiencies as it scales up.

The Market

Mobile Advertising RevenueOne thing people might be worried about is competition from Apple and Google. We’re not. Here’s why:

  • Even though Google is much bigger than Millennial (see chart at right, using data aggregated and estimated by Business Insider Intelligence), most of that is on owned-and-operated properties. Google’s AdMob network is bigger than Millennial’s but it is not dominant.
  • Apple’s online advertising format/network, iAds, has struggled in the marketplace.
  • Ad networks are not a winner take all market. On the web, there are a few giants, and many profitable smaller players. There’s no reason why it couldn’t be the same on mobile, and Millennial, as the biggest independent player, is well positioned.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Millennial Media looks like a strong business scaling up nicely in an exciting, fast-growing market. It’s kind of a boring business–an ad network, but it seems to be executing well. More importantly, don’t trust the media reports that will inevitably bang on about how Millennial has never been profitable. Yes, that’s true, but it doesn’t matter.

Microsoft Already Won The Battle For The Living Room When Nobody Was Looking (MSFT)

Two bits of news came out yesterday that illustrate how far ahead Microsoft is in the battle for the living room.

First, Microsoft announced it had sold 1.7 million Xboxes in November. That includes 1 million in the week of Thanksgiving.

More quietly, an analyst firm called Strategy Analytics released a report on “connected TV players,” like Apple TV, Boxee, and the Google TV devices from Sony and Logitech.

The firm says that sales of those devices will reach 12 million in 2011, with Apple TV shipping 4 million.

In other words, Microsoft sold more Xboxes in a single week than Apple sells in an average quarter. And Apple is the market leader in that “connected TV players” space. At least when you ignore game consoles.

This isn’t to pick on Apple. It’s simply to point out that Microsoft’s “Trojan horse” strategy with the Xbox has worked amazingly well.

And this was absolutely part of Microsoft’s strategy from the beginning — way back in 2005 before the Xbox 360 launched, Microsoft executives were talking about trying to expand the market beyond hardcore video gamers and turn it into a more general-purpose entertainment device. But Microsoft always knew it had to make a top-notch game console first to get the installed base, then add entertainment features over time.

It’s been doing that, quietly, for more than five years now and has sold almost 60 million Xboxes in the process. With the addition of a whole bunch of TV and other video content last week, the strategy has finally reached full fruition.

Apple, Google, and other connected TV companies could still have a chance if they team up with TV makers so the software is built into your new television set. But any company who hopes to compete with the Xbox by selling an add-on box that DOESN’T play games is in a deep state of denial.
