TV broadcasters hope to dominate the second screen with ConnecTV
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/19/tv-broadcasters-hope-to-dominate-the-second-screen-with-connectv/
No one has quite figured it out yet, but there seems to be little doubt that tablet devices have their place on the couch to serve as a second screen while American’s enjoy their favorite past time — watching TV. In addition to many independent startups we’ve discussed in the past, the old guard, that already owns most of broadcast TV stateside, has a startup of its own called ConnecTV. In development for two years already, ConnecTV is currently in beta and has the hopes to go live in January. The idea is of course to put what you might want to see on your second screen while you watch the main action on the big screen. This includes sports scores, statistics, as well as what your friends may or may-not be saying on Twitter or Facebook — and of course advertising. We’d be shocked if most tablet owners weren’t already using their slate in front of the TV and can imagine how many more might if there was a great app that brought it all together.

Sports Fans Coalition intends to lobby against NFL blackouts
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/16/sports-fans-coalition-intends-to-lobby-against-nfl-blackouts/
We know how it is, you have a big HDTV and inexpensive adult beverages at home and you just don’t feel compelled to spend the bucks to go to the game in these tough economic times. We feel for you, but the NFL does not as your situation doesn’t exactly pay all those player’s salaries. Well, starting this Friday the Sports Fans Coalition, along with other organizations, plans to petition the FCC for change to the current blackout rule. The groups argue that since many of the stadiums are built with public funds, Joe Consumer has the right to watch those games at home. As is, we’re mostly just glad the old NFL blackout policy, prior to 1973 that made all home games unavailable to the home market, isn’t still in effect. Of course that doesn’t mean that we believe the current blackout policy actually helps sell those $100+ tickets and believe the NFL might realize more profits if it sought out more modern supplemental revenue strategies.

Appcelerator developers warm to Windows Phone, give BlackBerry the cold shoulder
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/15/appcelerator-developers-warm-to-windows-phone-give-blackberry-t/
As the year winds to a close, it seems that developer sentiments have shifted since we last checked in with Appcelerator and its opinionated community of coders. In a survey performed in conjunction with IDC, the results suggest a steady interest to develop for smartphones and tablets of the iOS and Android variety, but also reveal a punctuated surge in enthusiasm for Windows Phone. The platform experienced an eight percent uptick since last quarter, with developers citing Nokia’s involvement as a primary motivating factor. While Microsoft’s OS still lags significantly behind the front-runners, it has significantly separated itself from other competitors. For instance, interest in BlackBerry smartphones fell by seven percent, to roughly half that of Windows Phone. It should be noted that this survey doesn’t reflect the development community as a whole, but merely of Appcelerator Titanium users — if you’re curious, the product is a cross-platform development environment for mobile apps. While the 2,160 respondents may not perfectly represent reality, we wouldn’t be surprised if they were darn close.

Yahoo launches IntoNow for iPad, recommends telling it how it is
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/04/yahoo-launches-intonow-for-ipad-recommends-telling-it-how-it-is/
TV companion app IntoNow has made its first major foray since it was snapped up by Yahoo earlier this year. Its new iPad app is now up for grabs and brings the same contextual magicks found on the iPhone version, expanded to make the most of the Apple tablet‘s 9.7-inch screen. The app picks up on audio cues made by whatever you’re watching on TV and then displays websites, game scores, even Twitter feeds of musicians and other famous types shown on the big(ger) screen. Now you can tell those overpaid athletes and awful, awful actors exactly what they did wrong. Trolling’s never been so convenient.
