Microsoft’s Anti-Android Twitter Campaign Blew Up In Its Face (MSFT, GOOG)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/microsofts-anti-android-twitter-campaign-blew-up-in-its-face-2012-12

Microsoft’s official Windows Phone Twitter account began a hashtag campaign yesterday asking people to use #droidrage to complain about malware on Android devices.

(It’s often a complaint that Android devices are more susceptible to malware than other phones. However, Google has done a good job at cracking down on malicious apps in its Google Play app store, so it hasn’t really been a problem for most people lately.)

As one would expect, the campaign is blowing up in Microsoft’s face.

Android fans used the hashtag to blast Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 8 operating system. We searched the hashtag and picked out a few good ones. Thanks to DroidLife for picking up on this.

Now check out our review of HTC’s Windows Phone 8x >

Enjoy:

Whoops. Just activated another million devices today. Sorry bout that, @windowsphone. #DroidRage

You are as vulnerable to malware on Android as you are on a desktop computer. Be smart. Think then press. #droidrage

I hate how everyones windows phone looks the same and everyones android looks customized and personal! #DroidRage

Samsung Official TV Ad for Galaxy SIII is …. Officially useless

Unfortunately, Samsung …  not memorable, full of cliche’d cliche’s and doesn’t tell me ANYTHING about the product and why I would want to buy it…

Officially useless …  why’d you have to go out and spoil a perfectly AWESOME device?

The Encyclopaedia Britannica is going out of print

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/14/the-encyclopaedia-britannica-is-going-out-of-print/

It was probably inevitable, but on Tuesday, it became official: the Encyclopaedia Britannica is finally going out of print. The news was confirmed yesterday by Jorge Cauz, president of Chicago-based Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc., who told the New York Times that his company has decided to completely abandon print operations, in favor of its online platform. The announcement marks the end of a remarkable 244-year run for Britannica and its leather-bound tomes, which at one point stood as a hallmark of middle class living rooms and libraries. In fact, it’s been barely two decades since the company reached its high water mark, when it sold some 120,000 sets back in 1990. Once the internet came into full bloom, however, Britannica’s sales soon plummeted. In 2010, the publisher sold just 8,000 sets, leaving an additional 4,000 unsold copies to gather dust in a warehouse.

Tuesday’s announcement may mark the end of an era, but Cauz seems to have come to terms with Britannica’s decision, calling it a “rite of passage.” He’s also eager to devote more time to his company’s website, which will look to chip away at Wikipedia‘s market hegemony. Cauz, however, believes the two platforms can (and must) co-exist, because they fill two different roles. “We cannot deal with every single cartoon character, we cannot deal with every love life of every celebrity,” he explained. “But we need to have an alternative where facts really matter. Britannica won’t be able to be as large, but it! will al ways be factually correct.”

Samsung / Blockbuster reportedly sign streaming deal in Oz, US and Europe next?

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/21/samsung-blockbuster-video-streaming-deal/

We know Samsung’s been ramping up its home entertainment arsenal. Now, recent intel acquired by the folks at SmartHouse suggests that the Korean outfit’s about to dive into deeper waters, after reportedly striking a deal in Australia. The pact, that’s yet to become official, would give the manufacturer access to the plethora of films available from your favorite blue-and-yellow video store, which could then be streamed to your beloved Galaxy handset or Tab, as well as Sammy-branded Smart TVs, Blu-ray players and laptops. Furthermore, the report claims Samsung’s got a friendly billing system in the works that’d allow easy access to the content on your devices. It’s expected to hit US and Euro shores “as early as September.” Until then you’ll have to stick with the good ol’ Redbox kiosks.

Samsung spinning off LCD business

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/20/samsung-spinning-off-lcd-business/

When the Korea Exchange asked Sammy about rumors of an impending spin-off of its LCD business, the firm said it was a move it was considering. Well, consider it done — today Samsung announced it would be launching Samsung Display on April 1st, 2012 with $6.6 billion in its coffers. The move is still waiting for shareholder approval, but Donggun Park, executive vice president of Samsung’s LCD business, seems optimistic. “The spin-off will allow us to make quicker business decisions and respond to our clients’ needs more swiftly.” This decision comes just months after Sammy agreed to take Sony’s stake in S-LCD, turning the former display partnership into a fully owned subsidiary. Hit the break for the official (machine translated) press release.

The White House joins Google+, invites you to Hangout

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/22/white-house-google-plus-hangouts/

President Obama may have been on Google+ since November, but the administration is now stepping up its presence on the social network even further in anticipation of next week’s State of the Union address and the forthcoming presidential campaign. It now has an official White House Google+ page, where it plans to post the usual news, photos and videos, and also host regular Hangout video chats. There’s no promises yet that the President himself will take part, but the White House says it will regularly have administration officials and policy experts take part in the conversations, which will also be streamed on YouTube and WhiteHouse.gov. Those interested can click the link below to add the page to their Circles.

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/netflix-officially-announces-uk-ireland-launch/

While it was already live for many, Netflix has made its launch in the United Kingdom and Ireland officially official, streaming its catalog of entertainment for 5.99 pounds / 6.99 euros a month. Residents can queue for a one month free trial at the website right now, and at launch it works not only on PCs, but also the usual suite of game consoles, Blu-ray players from LG, Samsung Smart TV, iOS and Android phones plus smart TV adaptors from Philips, Western Digital and Roku. As for content, it’s sourcing from All3Media, the BBC, CBS, Channel 4’s 4oD, Disney UK & Ireland, ITV, Lionsgate UK, MGM, Miramax, Momentum Pictures, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox and Viacom International Media Networks. Like the Latin American service, it also includes Open Graph Facebook tie-ins that are apparently held back in the US due to regulatory concerns. Check the official press release for more details on what’s currently available after the break, or just hit Netflix to sign up and give the streaming a shot no matter which side of the pond you’re on.

How The Official Facebook iPad App Affected The Third Party App Market, And Use On Safari

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-facebook-ipad-app-2011-12

Here’s a look at how the official Facebook app affected usage of third party apps, and Facebook on Safari from Onavo, which analyzes data usage for users. It conducted an anonymous study of several thousand Pad 3G users, logging both web and app usage.

As you can see, the third party app usage fell, but not nearly as much as the use of Safari, which was really demolished. Apparently, people don’t want to use the browser. They want native apps.
