Microsoft’s Anti-Android Twitter Campaign Blew Up In Its Face (MSFT, GOOG)
Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/microsofts-anti-android-twitter-campaign-blew-up-in-its-face-2012-12
Microsoft’s official Windows Phone Twitter account began a hashtag campaign yesterday asking people to use #droidrage to complain about malware on Android devices.
(It’s often a complaint that Android devices are more susceptible to malware than other phones. However, Google has done a good job at cracking down on malicious apps in its Google Play app store, so it hasn’t really been a problem for most people lately.)
As one would expect, the campaign is blowing up in Microsoft’s face.
Android fans used the hashtag to blast Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 8 operating system. We searched the hashtag and picked out a few good ones. Thanks to DroidLife for picking up on this.
Now check out our review of HTC’s Windows Phone 8x >
Enjoy:
Whoops. Just activated another million devices today. Sorry bout that, @windowsphone. #DroidRage

My wireless mouse wasn’t compatible with Win8 so I downloaded an app on my Nexus phone to act as a mouse for my PC #DroidRage

You are as vulnerable to malware on Android as you are on a desktop computer. Be smart. Think then press. #droidrage

Samsung spinning off LCD business
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/20/samsung-spinning-off-lcd-business/
When the Korea Exchange asked Sammy about rumors of an impending spin-off of its LCD business, the firm said it was a move it was considering. Well, consider it done — today Samsung announced it would be launching Samsung Display on April 1st, 2012 with $6.6 billion in its coffers. The move is still waiting for shareholder approval, but Donggun Park, executive vice president of Samsung’s LCD business, seems optimistic. “The spin-off will allow us to make quicker business decisions and respond to our clients’ needs more swiftly.” This decision comes just months after Sammy agreed to take Sony’s stake in S-LCD, turning the former display partnership into a fully owned subsidiary. Hit the break for the official (machine translated) press release.

Google updates ToS, shares your data across its services (video)
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/24/google-new-privacy-policy/

You’re you, right? Of course you are. If you have an Account, Google knows that too and now, with an updated and streamlined Google Terms of Service, you’re even more you than ever before. The company is consolidating most of its more than 70 separate privacy documents into a single Privacy Policy that is so important it gets capitalized. The biggest change? If you have a Google Account, your information will now be shared across the company’s many services. Scary? Don’t fear — the company is taking this time to re-iterate its pledge to never sell your personal information, never share it externally and to continue to support the Data Liberation Front. Viva transparency.

Netflix officially announces UK, Ireland launch
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/netflix-officially-announces-uk-ireland-launch/
While it was already live for many, Netflix has made its launch in the United Kingdom and Ireland officially official, streaming its catalog of entertainment for 5.99 pounds / 6.99 euros a month. Residents can queue for a one month free trial at the website right now, and at launch it works not only on PCs, but also the usual suite of game consoles, Blu-ray players from LG, Samsung Smart TV, iOS and Android phones plus smart TV adaptors from Philips, Western Digital and Roku. As for content, it’s sourcing from All3Media, the BBC, CBS, Channel 4′s 4oD, Disney UK & Ireland, ITV, Lionsgate UK, MGM, Miramax, Momentum Pictures, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox and Viacom International Media Networks. Like the Latin American service, it also includes Open Graph Facebook tie-ins that are apparently held back in the US due to regulatory concerns. Check the official press release for more details on what’s currently available after the break, or just hit Netflix to sign up and give the streaming a shot no matter which side of the pond you’re on.

How The Official Facebook iPad App Affected The Third Party App Market, And Use On Safari
Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-facebook-ipad-app-2011-12
Here’s a look at how the official Facebook app affected usage of third party apps, and Facebook on Safari from Onavo, which analyzes data usage for users. It conducted an anonymous study of several thousand Pad 3G users, logging both web and app usage.
As you can see, the third party app usage fell, but not nearly as much as the use of Safari, which was really demolished. Apparently, people don’t want to use the browser. They want native apps.
