Good morning, AdLand. Here’s what you need to know today:

Of course the biggest news from this weekend is that formerly number two and three holding companies, Publicis and Omnicom, merged. Revenues for Publicis Omnicom Groupe will now far exceed WPP at $23 billion.

GroupM Global President Dominic Proctor condescends the merger. Although he said that it is “an interesting move,” Proctor continued, “neither Omnicom nor Publicis was able to bring their investment teams together effectively as individual companies, so it be fun to see if they can now do it together.” GroupM is part of WPP.

Havas CEO David Jones said that the merger will be bad for clients and employees.

FT takes a look at Omnicom’s John Wren, “the quiet man of ad land.”

Havas CEO Thinks Surprise Omnicom-Publicis Merger Might Be Bad For Clients And Staff

Earlier today, rivals Publicis Groupe and Omnicom announced a surprise merger that makes the new entity the biggest holding company in the world. Now totaling $23 billion in revenues, the newly minted Publicis Omnicom Groupe surpasses WPP, which used to be number one.

But some ad execs are questioning if the new partnership will actually hurt staff and clients.

Havas CEO David Jones said in a statement, “I’m not sure this is in the best interests of their clients or their talent. Clients today want us to be faster, more agile, more nimble and more entrepreneurial, not bigger and more bureaucratic and more complex.”

And can it be more agile at such a large scale? Particularly “in a world where digital and technology have made scale irrelevant.”

Jones continued, “Our business is very simple – it’s about clients and talented employees – and as I said, I’m not sure this move is good for either of them.”

But Omnicom CEO John Wren said at the press conference today that “anyone who is concerned about any of this should not be.”

Standard Media Index Survey Shows Ad Spend Way Down in Cable

Analysts at the Standard Media Index, which tracks approximately 60 percent of media agency buys (excluding those from Omnicom and GroupM), issued a report for Q2 tracking year-over-year ad spend at major cable networks, and the findings weren’t so hot for ESPN (down 31 percent), MTV (also off by 31 percent) and E! (25 percent down), among others. The findings don’t track CPM or volume specifically, but revenue from the major media agencies, making the findings particularly useful at this moment, given that one of the agencies not participating (GroupM) is also the last agency standing in the ongoing upfront.

Facebook Ads Still Lag Paid Search In Click-Through Rates

The telecommunications and publishing industries enjoy the highest average click-through rates on their Facebook ads, according to a new report from Salesforce and Social.com.

Telecom had the best-performing Facebook ads with a CTR  of .92%. Ads from the publishing industry enjoyed a CTR of .8%.

The worst-performing ads came from deals, advertising, gaming, and at the bottom of the heap — dating service ads, which had a .027% CTR. The low numbers are a sign that consumers are leery of these industries, and may consider them spammy.

By comparison, paid search ads average CTRs of 1% to 5% for large consumer brands, according to research conducted by former Omnicom Chief Digital Officer Dr. Augustine Fou in March 2013.

The Salesforce and Social.com report on Facebook ads was based on 1 million ad units and 114 billion impressions shown in 25 countries between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2013.

While no holding company’s results are pretty these days, Interpublic Group of Cos. last week posted particularly poor numbers, swinging to a net loss of over $35 million for the first nine months of 2009 from almost $60 million in profit during the same period in 2008. IPG’s third-quarter revenue fell 18% compared to declines of 14.4% at rival Omnicom Group, 8.7% at WPP (factoring out the effect of acquisitions and currency shifts) and 5.3% at Publicis Groupe. WPP’s reported revenue, including revenue from its big Taylor Nelson Sofres acquisition, rose 16.7%. In the same quarter, net income attributable to IPG tumbled 47.3%, more than double the drop of Omnicom (down 22.5%).

Google changed the game by changing the business model from paying for impressions to paying only when the advertiser gets the click.  This helped to cut out the 99% of waste and inefficiency which existed in the industry.


WPP Profit Dropped 47% in Second Quarter More Than Half of Company’s Revenue Came From Nontraditional Advertising

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Using words such as “severe” and “surprise” to describe the recession’s impact on its business, WPP, the world’s largest advertising conglomerate, today said its profit was down 47% for the second quarter. And WPP Chief Executive Martin Sorrell said it will be a while before marketing executives begin to spend and take chances the way they did just a few years back.

In a first half earnings statement released this morning, WPP Group announced that digital and direct marketing-related services now comprise 25% of its body.

WPP Group owns labels like 24/7 Real Media, Mediaedge:cia, MediaCom, Mindshare, GroupM and Outrider.

Digital and direct garnered $1.7 billion in revenues in the first half of ‘09, with a projected annual run rate of nearly $3.5 billion total. But it is digital media and advertising that appear to be dominating the segment.

Overall, first half revenues fell 2.9% to $6.4 billion in the first half on a reported basis, MediaPost reports. Like-for-like, however, total revenues slid 8.3% against the first half of 2008.

According to WPP, traditional advertising and “media investment management” have been the hardest-hit amidst the economic downturn.

“On a constant currency basis, advertising and media investment management revenues fell by 7.5%, with like-for-like revenues down 7.8%,” it stated.

Branding and identity, healthcare and specialist communications — which includes direct, internet and interactive — were least affected.

The media conglomerate committed to prioritizing the growth of digital communications, customer insights and strong geographic markets.
