Google Fiber is ‘the most consistently fast ISP in America’

Netflix's ISP rankings confirm the expected Google Fiber is 'the most consistently fast ISP in America'

Like there was ever any doubt, right? Netflix — which serves up over one billion hours of video streaming to some 30 million members per month — owes it to itself to keep track of which ISPs are killing it, and which simply need to be killed. Now, the outfit’s finally ready to begin publishing its findings, ranking America’s major Internet Service Providers based upon “actual performance across all Netflix streams.” The shocker to end all shockers? “Google Fiber is now the most consistently fast ISP in America, according to actual user experience on Netflix streams in November.”

Of note, however, Verizon’s fiber-based FiOS offering came mighty close. Of course, Google’s Fiber isn’t available outside of the Kansas Cities region, while Verizon has (loosely) confirmed that it has no plans to expand the existing FiOS infrastructure beyond the 13 states that were lucky enough to get it. Broadly, cable shows better than DSL, while AT&T’s U-verse — dubbed a “hybrid fiber-DSL service” — ranked quite poorly compared to both Google Fiber and FiOS. Head on over to the source for the full rundown, and feel free to begin the relocation process to Kansas. Good internet, good barbecue, Collin Klein — what’s not to love?

Coke And Pepsi’s Business Model Is ‘Insane’ (SODA)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/coke-and-pepsis-insane-business-model-2012-11

crushed coke

SodaStream CEO Daniel Birnbaum has an incentive to disparage his rivals — but nontheless he made a strong argument as to why Coke and Pepsi are “antiquated” and “insane.”

Some unusual candor in an interview with WSJ’s Simon Zekaria:

“Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo will have to face the reality that their business model cannot be preserved forever. The world is changing and we’re going to call it out,” says the CEO of SodaStream.

“If the beverage industry had to create itself now from scratch, it wouldn’t do it the way it is. You don’t need factories, trucks, bottles and cans,” he says. “Transportation for carbonated drinks in the world utilizes 100 million barrels of oil every year. That is 20 times the BP disaster that hit the Gulf of Mexico.”

“I think it is criminal that the industry, led by two big companies, will do anything to protect their antiquated business model. They are generating 35 million bottles and cans every single day in the U.K. alone. World-wide it is one billion bottles and cans, most of which just go to trash, landfill, the oceans or parks. It’s insane,” Mr. Birnbaum added.

Now that he mentions it, that does seem wildly inefficient.

Of course, inefficient companies can last a long time thanks to all of that infrastructure in place. And if the industry is disrupted by a new company, there’s no guarantee that company will be SodaStream (which is one of the most shorted stocks on the market).

As Facebook announced its one billion-user milestone this morning, Mark Zuckerberg also unveiled its first-ever, agency created ad.

This premiere also served as the announcement that Wieden & Kennedy — creators of Old Spice’s “Man your man could smell like” and Nike’s “Just Do It” slogan —is the social media giant’s agency of record.

The 90-second spot, titled “The Things That Connect Us” is currently living on Facebook, is an emotional tribute that existentially discusses the things that connect people. Like chairs. “Chairs are like Facebook,” the ad states. It also says, “the universe it is vast and dark and makes us wonder if we are alone.”

Facebook Is Going To Build Its Own Search Engine! (FB, GOOG)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-search-engine-2012-9

Facebook sponsored results search

Mark Zuckerberg was refreshingly candid speaking today at TechCrunch Disrupt.

One part of his talk that’s going to draw a lot of scrutiny was when he was talking about the company’s search efforts.

Zuckerberg said that Facebook has one billion queries on a daily basis and it’s basically doing that without trying.

He then hinted that Facebook is going to start trying.

He said that search is increasingly headed towards answering people’s questions. Facebook, which has a trove of data on users, is “uniquely positioned” to deliver answers for users.

Facebook has a team of engineers working on improving the search engine.

He said, “At some point, we’ll do it.”

Google’s highly lucrative business is built on search. If Facebook could capture even a fraction of the revenue Google captures it would be a huge boon for the company’s top and bottom lines.

over one billion in June

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/04/netflix-users-view-one-billion-hours-of-video-june/

Despite all Netflix’s misgivings up until early this year, the service has got its users watching more video than ever. CEO Reed Hastings recently took to Facebook to announce that subscribers have watched over one billion hours of content in a single month, for the “first time ever.” As Tech Crunch points out, that’s about one hour of video-viewing per day against the five hours that the regular ole tube garners. Hastings also mentioned he’s excited about the service’s exclusive rights to House of Cards and Arrested Development, declaring that they’ll help to “blow these records away.” If you’ll recall, back in January the company claimed 26 million streaming subscribers worldwide, compared to just over 10 million who opted for discs — it’ll be very interesting to see how these fluctuate given its newer takes on content.

Netflix users clock-in more viewing hours than ever: over one billion in June originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 04 Jul 2012 09:08:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

We Waste a Billion Gallons of Gas a Year Because We're So FatHeavier cars use more fuel. Now some bright spark has calculated that the US uses one billion gallons more gas every year than if the entire population had remained at the average weight of the 1960s. For every extra pound added to the average weight, the country uses another 39 million gallons of fuel each year.

So complain about gas prices if you must, but the rapid increase you should really be worried about is your waistline. [The Atlantic]
