Amazon has nothing to worry about. Oracle will never win the cloud without developers.

No matter what Larry Ellison says on stage at Oracle Open World, Oracle will never match Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) first-class treatment of the developer community. Nor will Oracle even try: it’s a vertical iron machine that Ellison believes has the power to be the new “cloud” for IT. It is not a horizontal distributed, self-service environment that you get when you use AWS.

Lest storage vendors thought they were immune to disruption that open source hardware is having on the server industry, Netflix’s new Open Connect content-delivery network might make them think again. While Open Connect directly targets commercial CDNs, it’s based upon (or at least inspired by) open source storage designs first released by Backblaze almost three years ago. Backblaze’s design evolving and expanding its range into the data centers of a Fortune 1000 company is significant in the same way the evolution of modern man was for neanderthals.

Facebook Finally Fights Back Against Auto-Sharing Spam With New RulesApps that auto-share your activity on Facebook can be a pain in the ass, and Facebook is taking steps to block the worst offenders. New rules require that apps that auto-share information about articles you read or videos you watch can only do so if you engage with the content for at least 10 seconds. Facebook has also introduced additional restrictions on video apps: They’ll now need to provide “clear, on-going, and in-context messaging” that your activity is being published on Facebook. The Overwhelming Android Sprawl, VisualizedYou’ve probably read about Android market fragmentation and wondered just how big a deal it is. This visualization spells out the problem tangentially: there are almost 4,000 unique Android devices out there running a single app available on Play. And only a very few of them run the most recent version.

The image was put together by Open Signal Maps to visualize the distribution of devices using their app. It includes data from 681,900 users, and breaks them down into almost 4,000 devices. Admittedly, that number is artificially high, because custom ROMs report identities differently.

But, the point here is that developing for Android is no longer as straightforward as it once was. With so many devices and an ever-expanding catalog of operating systems to cater for, it’s hardly surprising that Android support is shaky at best. By contrast, a similar image for an iOS app would only feature a handful of devices.

Oh, and if you were wondering, yes, that big green block occupying a ten percent share is the Samsung Galaxy S II. [Open Signal Maps via The Verge]

Red Hat Is The First Open Source Company To Top $1 Billion A Year (RHT)

Red Hat announced $1.13 billion in annual revenue, up 25 percent from a year ago.

This officially marks the first time a company that makes 100% of its living from open source products topped the billion-dollar mark.

For the quarter ending February 29, Red Hat posted revenue of $297 million, up 21% year-over-year, and GAAP EPS of 18 cents, up 6%. Its quarterly non-GAAP EPS was 29 cents, up 12% from last year.

Analysts, on average, expected earnings of 27 cents per share on revenue of $291.2 million.

Shares are up over 7% to about $55 in after hours trading.

When it’s the number of active users Facebook claims in its initial public offering filing. Last week the social networking giant amended that filing and conceded it may not be so giant. While still massive, Facebook said as many as 6% of those accounts may be fakes and another 5% may be from people who downloaded Facebook’s mobile app and have it running in the background of their device even though they no longer use the site.

Former CP+B Digital Producer is Ready to

It’s been a little while since we’ve rolled out a Boutique Call post, but since the category seems somewhat wide open at this point, we’ll let you know that Shaz Sedighzadeh has started up a new operation called The Supply.

Sedighzadeh set up the new shop, which is being dubbed as a “a resource representation entity for digital and creative talent,” following a two-year stint as a digital producer at CP+B, where he helped produce work for Old Navy, Coke Zero and Microsoft Windows. Prior to Crispin, the new entrepreneur spent a few months on the digital production side at Tool of North America.

Want an explanation of what The Supply does? Well, regarding his new operation, here’s a statement from Sedighzadeh, who lives in Denver but shuttles between NY and LA often: “The world of traditional staffing, simply matching keywords on a resume, has been a working model for some time, and may continue to be in some capacity. But in the digital advertising world today, things are shifting way too fast to solely be supported by the standard candidate sourcing methods. Talent specialists and reps now need to think like experienced digital producers and strategists; they need to ‘get it’, knowing what the project/campaign consists of, what type/level of specific talent is needed, matching resources with the timeline/budget, identifying what design aesthetic needs to be applied, whether it’s a job for a vendor or a couple of freelancers, and the list goes on.”

Netflix officially announces UK, Ireland launch

While it was already live for many, Netflix has made its launch in the United Kingdom and Ireland officially official, streaming its catalog of entertainment for 5.99 pounds / 6.99 euros a month. Residents can queue for a one month free trial at the website right now, and at launch it works not only on PCs, but also the usual suite of game consoles, Blu-ray players from LG, Samsung Smart TV, iOS and Android phones plus smart TV adaptors from Philips, Western Digital and Roku. As for content, it’s sourcing from All3Media, the BBC, CBS, Channel 4’s 4oD, Disney UK & Ireland, ITV, Lionsgate UK, MGM, Miramax, Momentum Pictures, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox and Viacom International Media Networks. Like the Latin American service, it also includes Open Graph Facebook tie-ins that are apparently held back in the US due to regulatory concerns. Here’s What Groupon Insiders REALLY Think Of LivingSocial (GRPN)

LivingSocial is a very close competitor to Groupon.

Unaiz Kabani, the data whiz at Daily deals aggregator Yipit, tells us that Groupon’s market share dropped to 54% in September, down from 57% in August. Meanwhile LivingSocial was up to 22% from 19% in August.

Despite this heated race, Groupon barely mentioned LivingSocial in its IPO roadshow. Can you even spot it on this slide from the presentation?

But what do Groupon execs really think of LivingSocial? While we were talking to sources for our story INSIDE GROUPON, we got a pretty clear picture.

Highlights:

  • “LivingSocial was discussed in every management meeting.  It always seemed liked Groupon was winning in the markets that mattered, except in D.C., which is LivingSocial’s home base.”
  • “I would say LivingSocial was the main driver behind the huge marketing expenses because the idea was always, lets have more subscribers and thus more sales, then them.”
  • “Internally, the company rhetoric to employees was we’re way better, way cooler. [It was] a pep rally approach – they’re the rival the team can beat. At the management level, I would say they were taken seriously.”
  • “LivingSocial had the biggest influence when they would do something before Groupon.  They launched their instant deals before Groupon Now got launched and that was kind of a blow.  They did their escapes before we had a travel channel and that was a blow also. “
  • “The perception was that they launched an inferior product so ours was better. Just as a consumer, their mobile platform is far inferior.”
  • “Having that first mover advantage was huge.  It just always seemed like Groupon maybe had deeper pockets and could take advantage of the scale they thought they needed, then LivingSocial could.”
  • “They think they’re a lot smarter than LivingSocial.  Andrew thinks about LivingSocial all night and all day.  He totally obsesses about them.”
  • The Whole Foods thing drove him crazy. Groupon was bidding on that too, and basically LivingSocial went in and fully subsidized the deal and said “we’ll pay the whole thing, we just want Whole Foods on our roster.’ And you saw the number, the LivingSocial thing really worked for them, it really lifted their top line.”
  • “They’re a great company, a great fast follower. I don’t know what they’re worth – maybe $3 billion to $6 billion dollars – which is amazing [since it] didn’t exist 3 years ago.”
  • “There’s scale advantage that they don’t have; they don’t have a global presence. “
  • “I think they get gobbled up by one of the big four – Apple, Amazon, Google, and Facebook. Or maybe they even get acquired by Groupon.”
  • “[If] Groupon is worth $15 billion or $16 billion then maybe LivingSocial is worth 4 or 5.”

Lift in search is a great indicator of interest. Modern consumers may be inspired by TV ads, but they usually go online to do more research for themselves, to inform their own purchase decision. The following examples show the lift in search after Superbowl commercials or for launch of products like Subway Footlongs. The use of unique, made-up words makes it easier to detect lift in search (see related post: made up words are great for tracking buzz and search volume ). There is now a correlation between offline paid advertising and online behaviors of modern consumers that can be tracked and ultimately related to sales.

What is harder to do is track lift in search from smaller TV media buys or from terms which are generic — e.g. American Express OPEN, Proctor & Gamble’s TAG (men’s deoorant), etc. And furthermore, people may or may not remember the brand name itself and may type in a more general search query — e.g. “talking baby” instead of” e-Trade” or “dancing lizards” instead of “SoBe LifeWater.” And most people usually forget to type in special URLs specified in the ads. So the opportunity is to 1) use made-up words which can be used to detect lift in search and 2) search-optimize around other more generic terms that people may search for if they remembered the ad, but did not remember the brand name itself.

key learnings include:

1. only the superbowl TV ads generates enough awareness to drive lift in search volume detectable above the noise or normal levels

2. made up words are useful in correlating paid advertising and subsequent online actions (e.g. search) because most users forget or are too lazy to type special URLs

3. is is always better to have real analytics from the site to see when paid campaigns hit; site analytics will also reveal more information about users including demographic information, what they are looking for, and even whether they “convert” to a sale or a desired action — like print off a coupon, etc.

Notice the January spikes for several of the examples below — these are their Superbowl ads in action. But also notice how sharp the spikes are — most of them go back to prior levels within 1 – 3 days (see related post: the ephemerality of the Superbowl halo )
