According to Unruly Media, which tracks not only what people watch but also what they share, Google was the most shared social video brand of 2012.

Thanks to campaigns like “Project Glass: One Day,” the company’s videos were shared a whopping 196.8 percent more than last year. Someone’s been doing his YouTube homework.

Five newcomers broke the top 10, including TNT, Coca-Cola, Abercrombie & Fitch, Samsung, and P&G. Volkswagen, which went viral last year with its Super Bowl sensation, “The Force,” dropped nine spots to number 10.

Apple App Revenues And Downloads More Concentrated in U.S. Than Google’s

Apple’s app downloads and app revenues are more concentrated in the U.S. than those of its primary rival, Google Play, according to data from App Annie

There are numerous app stores on Android, but Google Play is by far the largest. App Annie counted only free apps for its downloads figure. Paid apps are included in the revenue analysis, however.

A combined 53 percent of iOS app downloads come from the U.S., China, Japan, and the U.K., with the balance coming from the rest of the world. Google Play’s top four download markets are the U.S., Japan, South Korea, and India. They combine for 43 percent of Google Play downloads.

China was the second-largest iOS market for downloads, even though Apple’s operating system only controls a fraction of Chinese market device share. 

Interestingly, despite the fact that Google’s Android platform owns the massive Chinese smartphone market, Google offers very limited support for Google Play in China. Android apps are typically downloaded through third-party app stores.

While downlo! ads are important, developers ultimately want to get paid too. 

App Annie defines app revenues as revenues flowing to developers “through the store, including revenues both from the price to download an app, as well as any in-app purchases (including subscriptions).”

We know that iOS app revenues historically dwarf Android revenues. App Annie found that iOS generates four times the revenues of Google Play, even as Google Play revenues have grown 311 percent this year. 

Although iOS revenues are more concentrated in the U.S. than Google Play’s, it turns out iOS revenues are more evenly distributed across markets.

iOS receives 40 percent of its revenues from countries outside its largest four markets. Google Play saw only 23 percent of its revenues flow from outside the top four. 

Google Play leans heavily on high monetization in Japan and South Korea, but has not effectively monetized its massive global user base.

Mobile Accounts For Over 60 Percent Of Pandora’s Ad Revenues

Mobile continues to drive Pandora’s ad business.

Mobile ad revenues for its fiscal third quarter were $66 million, up from an estimated $53 million a quarter prior. Mobile accounted for 62 percent of total ad revenues, compared to 59 percent in the second quarter. 

Overall mobile revenues, including subscriptions, increased $15 million in the quarter to $74 million.

Pandora is a prime example of how mobile is transforming what were once Web-based companies. With 77 percent of usage now coming from mobile— not to mention a majority of revenues— Pandora is essentially a mobile company.

Games Are The Leading Mobile App Category For Advertising

Games are the top destination for mobile advertisers, according to data compiled from Millennial Media’s Mobile Mix reports

In fact, games have held the top rank in mobile ad impressions since Millennial started tracking the quarterly data in Q2 2011.

The number two spot has been consistently occupied by the Music and entertainment category. Meanwhile, two mobile app categories, Social and Communications, have jockeyed for the third position. 

Games’ supremacy in mobile advertising follows on their success in app stores. According to data analyzed by BI Intelligence, games account for 33 percent of the top 200 free iPhone apps by downloads, 55 percent of the top 200 paid iPhone apps, and a whopping 70 percent of the top 200 grossing iPhone apps.

How Public Policy Polling Hilariously Proved That People Lie To Pollsters

Public Policy Polling, the firm that consistently asks the quirkiest and most provocative questions, offered in its latest national survey a revealing way to prove that, well, people will lie to make themselves seem more knowledgeable. 

PPP tested people’s reaction to the Simpson-Bowles plan to reduce the national deficit. It found that overall, respondents had a positive view of the plan, despite an overwhelming 60 percent that did not offer an opinion. 

To compare, the firm also gau ged the reaction to the so-called “Panetta-Burns plan,” which isn’t a real plan. It’s based on a mythical combination of Leon Panetta, the current Secretary of Defense and former chief of staff under President Bill Clinton, and Conrad Burns, a former Republican Senator from Montana.

Despite the fact that there is no such thing as the “Panetta-Burns” plan, 25 percent of respondents offered an opinion on it. Eight percent said they view it favorably, while 17 percent said they do not have a favorable opinion of the “plan.”

This has led to a snarky Twitter hashtag, in which users speculate on the mythical proposals in “Panetta-Burns.”

3 Myths About Facebook The Company Wishes Would Go Away (FB)

Ever since Facebook went public earlier this year — and was finally liberated from the SEC-required “quiet period” that all companies must go through when offering stock — Facebook has been trying to chase down several untrue rumors about how its business works.

As the old saying goes, a lie will go round the world while truth is pulling its boots on.

We sat down recently with Carolyn Everson, Facebook’s vp/global marketing solutions, and asked her what the most common misconceptions were among advertisers about the way Facebook works.

She told us that these are the three of the biggest:

1. “Facebook ads don’t work.”

Everson says: “I see it in the press sometimes. I will hear a marketer say, ‘Prove it to me, show me how Facebook marketing works.’ To me that’s code for ‘I haven’t believed it yet, or I haven’t seen enough data.’ And my team now is equipped globally with literally hundreds of examples and proof points of how Facebook advertising works [for] everything from Samsung launching a product down to your small/medium business trying to drive people into their stores.”

2. “Mobile is bad for Facebook.”

To be fair, this myth was started by Facebook itself, when it warned in its IPO papers that had not yet properly monetized mobile. It warned again in Q2that mobile may “negatively affect” revenue. Since then, however, mobile has turned out to be huge for Facebook.

Ev erson says: “Mobile is fantastic for monetization. Fourteen percent of our revenue from the third quarter was from mobile. The CPMs are higher in mobile across the board. The performance in the news feed on mobile are 8 to 10X. Let me give you some interesting stats. Rosetta Stone, language provider, did an offers product. They got 560,000 claims, 98 percent of them via mobile. Lawson’s is a Japanese convenient store, kind of like 7-11, they got 598,000 claims, 93 percent from mobile. It is a very powerful way for our marketers to reach our users and I will tell you that when I sit with the client council members, Keith Weed at Unilever or Marc Pritchard at P&G, any of the top CMOs, they are entirely focused on how Facebook can help them in emerging markets … Clearly more people are joining Facebook on mobile, so mobile’s been very positive from a user growth standpoint.”

3. “Facebook only works for brand awareness.”

Everson says too many advertisers think Facebook is only good at generating vague brand image impressions, and it’s not for driving direct sales. But she believes Facebook has uses throughout marketing’s customer “funnel”:

“The third myth, Facebook only works for top-of-the-funnel objectives, for brand awareness, for people having conversations or earned media. What we have now demonstrated consistently is we deliver throughout the entire funnel. ”

Online Doctor’s Sick Visits Could Be Coming To A Computer Near You

Could we be seeing the end of routine doctor visits?

Scientific American reports that researchers are testing a new system for electronic doctor visits that could potentially eliminate the need for patients to see a doctor for routine illnesses.

Patients would simply enter their symptoms and health record into an online system, and doctors would use this information to send a diagnosis and, when necessary, a prescription.

Early reports suggest that such diagnoses were just as accurate as those given in person, although there are still some kinks that need to be ironed out:

Researchers analyzed some 5,000 doctor visits for sinus infections and 3,000 visits for urinary tract infection. Less than 10 percent of all visits were electronic. One possible e-visit drawback: doctors were more likely to prescribe antibiotics after an e-visit than a face-to-face.

But patients with an e-visit had just about the same rate of follow up as those who had an office visit. Which suggests that there was not a higher rate of misdiagnosis or treatment failure online. E-visits were also cheaper.

Detractors will note that this program only applies to relatively routine illnesses, but even so, this is nothing to sneeze at.

One of the primary goals of Obamacare was to cut down on the use of expensive emergency room visits for routine medical care, which was clogging up emergency rooms and leading to millions of dollars in unpaid medical bills. This looks like a much cheaper and simpler way to accomplish the same thing.

Naturally, we’ll need to see more studies before these programs can be rolled out on a national scale, but this looks like a good place to start toward improving the ! efficien cy of the health care system. Massive, top-down reforms like Obamacare get most of the attention, but it is smaller innovations like these will do the most to shape the healthcare of the future.

It also seems clear that letting consumers benefit from cheaper prices is a way to push the health care system as a whole toward less costly methods. E-visits for routine problems (and ultimately, perhaps, e-visits to nurses rather than to physicians) can offer better, faster, more convenient service at a lower price. Moving in directions like this is the kind of health care reform we desperately need.

Small Businesses Are Backing Away From Groupon This Holiday Season

This holiday season, small retailers are leaving Groupon off their lists as far as sales strategy goes.

This shopping season is the biggest one of the year, and small businesses often rely on sales made during this period to bring them into the black as the year comes to a close.

A sales strategy that didn’t work during the rest of the year is out of the question for the holidays, says Pamela Springer, CEO of online small business network Manta.

This doesn’t bode well for Groupon and other daily deals sites. Only 3percent of retailers got repeat customers out of daily deals promotions, according to a survey Manta released Oct. 30.

“They’re doubling down on things that work, and leaving things that are less proven or they’ve had experience with and didn’t work off to the side,” says Springer.

If businesses aren’t getting repeat customers out of Groupon deals, they’re losing money, says Anthony Bruce, CEO of retail data analyzer Applied Predictive Technology. Groupon often charges businesses as much as half the revenue of a deal sale, which is usually a drastic discount already.

“If there are future purchases that occur because of a Groupon, that’s great,” says Bruce. “If it’s an incremental visit I wouldn’t have gotten anyway, it’s bad. If it’s a visit I would have gotten anyway but did it with a Groupon, that’s terrible.”

Jennifer Untermeyer says she won’t use Groupon this holiday season, because she lost money on the five daily deals she ran last year for her business, TravelKiddy, an online store that sells toys and games to keep kids busy during road trips or plane rides. She ran her first $10 deal for $20 of merchandise on Eversave last November, trying to snag holiday travelers, and ran four more similar deals on niche mom-! themed d eals sites, hoping to score new customers.

It didn’t work.

“We can tell how many people we’ve had repeat, and it’s eight or nine out of 3,000 deals,” she says. “We ended up in an overall loss, even factoring in the marketing benefits.”

Sales chief Kal Raman says Groupon helps businesses retain customers through its reward program, which is sort of like a frequent-flier program for customers. The program helps businesses track purchases a Groupon customer has made, and after a certain level of spending is reached, Groupon automatically sends the customer a free deal.

“We effectively become their loyalty-management company,” says Raman, who sees Groupon as a great way for retailers to sell inventory they’d otherwise be sitting on. “As a small-business owner, you can aim high, and we can hedge that risk.”

Will Ander, senior partner of retail strategy firm McMillan Doolittle, says liquidation is the only good thing Groupon does for small retailers. “It’s more effective than giving it to the Salvation Army.”

iOS Drives The Vast Majority Of E-commerce Mobile Traffic

iOS users are much more active on their devices than Android users, judging by traffic to U.S. e-commerce websites.

iOS accounted for over 70 percent of e-commerce websites’ mobile traffic last quarter, according to Monetate, which includes international visitors in its data.

Android, with a commanding 65 percent of global mobile platform market share last quarter—more than three times that of iOS— drove a relatively weak 23 percent of traffic. 

Apple’s strength is partly the result of the iPad’s continued dominance in the tablet market. The iPad accounted for 89 percent of tablet traffic and is the largest single driver of mobile traffic, reflecting tablets’ strength as a consumption device.  

However, even among smartphones, which drive more overall traffic than tablets, the iPhone drove 61 percent of e-commerce traffic last quarter to Android’s 38 percent. (Android had a 72 percent global smartphone market share to the iPhone’s 14 percent.)   

It’s unclear why Android users are so much less active on their devices, but it is probably also why app developers make four times as much money on iOS and significantly favor the platform.
