If you’ve recently made a particularly profitable stock investment and want to show it off, Paul Kweton has created a line of jewelry that turns a boring stock performance chart into fashionable wrist adornments.
His Embrace-Stock pieces are made with the assistance of Shapeways’ 3D printing service, and are available in two and three stock versions for $12.55 and $12.18 respectively. (I’m not sure why the more complicated version is the cheaper of the two.) All you need to do is choose the stocks, the time period, and software does the rest, creating a unique design that doesn’t even require you giving a cut to a smarmy investor. $30 billion net revenue, $1.5 billion net earnings, big drop in PC sales

HP reported results for its first fiscal quarter of 2012 this afternoon, including $30 billion in net revenue (down seven percent from the previous year), and net earnings of $1.5 billion (down a full 44 percent). Partly contributing to that drop is a slump from its Personal Systems Group, which saw revenue slip 15 percent year-over-year, and total desktop and notebook units decline a rather drastic 19 and 18 percent, respectively. The company’s Imaging and Printing Group also saw a seven percent decline in revenue, with the total number of printer units slipping 15 percent. HP’s services business managed to eke out a one percent growth with revenue of $8.6 billion, though, while its software business saw the biggest growth in any one area at 30 percent (that includes results from the recently-acquired Autonomy). The company’s full rundown can be found in the press release after the break, with additional numbers available at the source link below.
Update: On the company’s earnings call, CEO Meg Whitman laid some of the blame for PSG’s decline on hard drive shortages, but also said that HP has “under-invested in innovation for the last several years” and “been late to market too often,” adding that “we have to lead again.” A transcript of Whitman’s prepared remarks can be found here.

the overall advertising pie will shrink
the greater efficiencies of “digital” mean that the same amount of “advertising” can be achieved with fewer dollars because more waste can be eliminated. The decreases in ad spending in traditional media channels like newspapers will only be partially replaced by ad spending online.
For example, the dollars that used to fund newspaper classified advertising has been replaced by free online classifieds through Craigslist. While newspapers had incremental costs due to materials, printing, labor, and distribution, online classifieds have virtually no incremental cost.
Similarly print advertising, which was based on targeting ads to specific demographics of readerships are being replaced by online ads which can be more finely targeted to even more niche readerships — e.g. contextual advertising. And the revenue models based around cost per click are inherently more efficient (and thus lower cost) than the impression-based revenue models of magazines. Again for every dollar taken out of print advertising, only a few cents are needed to replace it in “digital.”
