Apple And Samsung Swallow All The Smartphone Industry’s Profits And Then Some (AAPL, RIMM, GOOG)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-value-share-for-mobile-companies-2012-8

Samsung and Apple have swallowed up all the profits in the smartphone business. According to data from Canaccord Genuity, last quarter those two companies had 108% of the industry’s profits.

Using Canaccord’s data we’ve made this chart. Note that it is annual data from 2007-2011, then quarterly data for the last two quarters. The ascent of Apple and Samsung, while everyone else crashes is astounding.

Google is The Least Diversified Business In Tech (GOOG, AAPL, MSFT, EBAY)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-google-is-the-least-diversified-business-in-tech-2012-2

We love this chart from Dan Frommer at SplatF.

He calls it the “Eggs In One Basket” index, because it charts out the largest source of revenue as a percentage for all the major tech companies. (Profits would be a different story altogether.)

Google gets over 90% of its revenue from one source: Advertising. The next closest is Amazon with product sales. But, Amazon’s product sales are a mix of goods, so it’s not exactly the same as relying on just advertising.

For now, this isn’t a big problem for Google. The online ad market is still growing, and Google can capture a lot of the market. But, if things were to change, or advertising were to slow down, then look out.

What’s incredible about this chart is how diverse Microsoft is from a sales perspective. Its most dominant business group, Office, only accounts for 30% of sales. Read more on the chart from Frommer here →

Hate To Be Rude, But Facebook Is Not The Next Google. It’s Not Even Close (GOOG)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-hate-to-be-rude-but-facebook-is-not-the-next-google-its-not-even-close-2012-1

Information about Facebook’s 2011 revenues and operating profits leaked last week, just ahead of this week’s expected IPO filing.

If CNBC’s reporting is accurate, the numbers are disappointing for a company that’s supposed to be valued at $75 billion to $100 billion when its shares start trading.

Revenues came in at $3.8 billion, less than an expected $4+ billion. Operating profits were $1.5 billion, less than an expected $2 billion.

Facebook’s results look particularly disappointing in comparison to Google’s first seven years of business. We’ve drawn out that comparison below.

The comparison is actually worse than it looks. Remember, Google was born at time when Internet usage, and online ad spending, wasn’t even half of what it is today.

The fact is, Facebook is a huge consumer hit – 850 million people us the site each month – but it’s ad products are not, really.

Google’s ad products are business magic. Consumers see ads for products that they literally want to see.

So far, Facebook hasn’t found that kind of magic. Investors looking at Facebook’s S1 filing this week will have to wonder if it ever will.

American Apparel’s Profits Are Getting Clipped Thanks To Groupon (APP)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/american-apparel-groupon-2012-1

american apparel

Just when it looked like things were starting to look up for cash-strapped American Apparel, profits are reportedly getting shaved.

Why?

Groupon.

From The New York Post‘s James Covert:

The hipster clothing chain racked up impressive sales gains during the holidays, but profits were squeezed hard as it took steep discounts, including those from a barrage of Groupon offers nationwide, sources told The Post.

American Apparel rang up millions of dollars in the fourth quarter selling cardigans, corduroys and sexy leggings through the daily deals site — a heap of bargains amounting to a “small but material” percentage of the company’s $157 million in total sales during the period, said one source briefed on the company’s finances.

The controversial clothing company has been struggling to turnaround its operations.

Apple Kills The Text Message (AAPL)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-apple-kills-the-overpriced-text-message-2012-1

Apple’s iMessage is killing off the overpriced text message, at least for a narrow group of iPhone owners.

Graphic designer Neven Mrgan posted this chart showing how his text messaging use changed after Apple released iOS 5 with iMessage. As you can see, it dropped dramatically.

Most of Mrgan’s friends are iPhone owners, so iMessaging is free between them. If you own an iPhone but most of your friends are on Android, RIM, or feature phones, you’re still going to have to pay for text messages.

Regardless, the writing is on the wall for text messaging. Carriers are going to be losing one of their easiest sources of profits.

Sports Fans Coalition intends to lobby against NFL blackouts

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/16/sports-fans-coalition-intends-to-lobby-against-nfl-blackouts/

We know how it is, you have a big HDTV and inexpensive adult beverages at home and you just don’t feel compelled to spend the bucks to go to the game in these tough economic times. We feel for you, but the NFL does not as your situation doesn’t exactly pay all those player’s salaries. Well, starting this Friday the Sports Fans Coalition, along with other organizations, plans to petition the FCC for change to the current blackout rule. The groups argue that since many of the stadiums are built with public funds, Joe Consumer has the right to watch those games at home. As is, we’re mostly just glad the old NFL blackout policy, prior to 1973 that made all home games unavailable to the home market, isn’t still in effect. Of course that doesn’t mean that we believe the current blackout policy actually helps sell those $100+ tickets and believe the NFL might realize more profits if it sought out more modern supplemental revenue strategies.

Sports Fans Coalition intends to lobby against NFL blackouts originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 23:57:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
