Google Shopper adds push notifications, new UI and more with 3.0 update

Google Shopper has just gotten the bump to version 3.0 with an update that brings a roster of fresh features, including a new UI with speedier navigation and larger images. In addition to the fresh coat of paint, the app sports a brand-new sales screen, image-focused search results and product ratings provided by GoodGuide. Page and Co. have also thrown in push notifications to keep users abreast of new features and content, and an area to showcase retail promotions. Itching to start penny pinching? Facebook privacy padlockTo say that Facebook has to tread lightly around privacy issues is an understatement, especially with a targeted ad push underway. Rather than navigate that minefield once more, the social network hopes to skip it entirely by posting an overview of how the ad system tracks habits while retaining our anonymity. For the most part, Facebook walks the fine line carefully. Its Facebook Exchange auction system relies on a unique, untraceable browser ID to target ads to specific people without ever getting their identity; both a mechanism targeting ads beyond Facebook and a Datalogix deal to track the ad conversion rate use anonymous e-mail address hashes that keep advertisers happy without making the addresses readable to prying eyes. The initiative sounds like it’s on the right course, although there’s caveats at work. Opting out of any Facebook Exchange ads requires tracking down individual ad providers, which isn’t likely to result in many of us leaving the ad revenue stream. Likewise, those who’d object even to the completely anonymous ad profiling don’t have a say in the matter. With those concerns in mind, it’s doubtful there will be many significant objections in the future — Facebook knows its advertising money train can only keep churning if its members are comfortable enough to come along for the ride.

Samsung aims to become key player in digital content distribution through company buyouts

The writing has been on the wall ever since Samsung’s acquisition of mSpot, but the Korean firm today confirmed to Reuters that it plans to join the ranks of Apple, Google and Amazon in the world of digital content distribution. Most importantly, it plans to do so through buyouts. Samsung executive Kang Tae-jin offered a rather frank overview of the company’s ambitions, saying that it will grow Music Hub into one of the top four services in terms of revenue and subscribers within the next three years. According to Kang, the push isn’t so much to tap a new source of revenue, but rather to drive hardware sales — perhaps it sees Apple’s rumored move into music streaming as a bit of a threat. That said, the announcement also dovetails with rumblings of Samsung’s efforts to build a more self-sufficient software ecosystem. Whatever the true reason, we’d imagine that the folks at Pandora, Spotify and the like are now watching the phone a bit more intently. Wouldn’t you?

Google+ Is Growing Much Faster Than Facebook Did In The Early Days (GOOG)

Don’t write off Google+ just yet — compared to Facebook’s early days, its growth is meteoric.

It took Facebook nearly a year to reach a million users and more than four years to reach 100 million. It took Google+ about two weeks to reach 10 million, and less than a year to reach 100 million. Paul Allen, the “unofficial” statistician for Google+ and founder of Ancestry.com, says Google+ could reach 400 million users by the end of the year.

Obviously Google+ has a huge advantages over Facebook from 2004. Facebook was closed to everyone but students back then. Google+ is getting a push from the world’s largest search engine. The Internet is more widely adopted now.

But still.

Google strikes deal to bring 27,000 Chromebooks to US schools in three states

It remains to be seen if they’ll be the big game-changer in education that Google hopes they will be, but the company is making some progress at getting its Chromebooks into schools. The latest push is a deal with three US school districts, which will see some 27,000 Chromebooks land in the hand of students in Iowa, Illinois and South Carolina. As CNET reports, South Carolina’s Richland School District Two is making by far the biggest investment of the lot, ordering 19,000 Chromebooks that will be used as part of a three-year program for students in the third through twelfth grades. As for Google itself, it still isn’t being too specific on the total number of Chromebooks now being used by schools, noting only that “hundreds” of schools across 41 states are using them in at least one classroom.

The Smartphone Is Becoming A Goliath In The Retail Industry

A study by the Times finds many retailers–including major ones like Best Buy, Nordstrom and Amazon–offer the most promotional deals for smartphones, which generate millions, if not billions, in revenue.

Amazon, for example, will make $5.37 billion in sales through mobile devices by year’s end, according to a recent survey by Internet Retailer.

Flash deal and group-buying sites are also jumping on board with mobile-exclusive deals of their own. Gilt Groupe, for example, started offering special holiday promotions on Friday, November 25 at 6 a.m.

Surprisingly, it’s bricks-and-mortar stores who will be making the biggest mobile-deal push. One of the main reasons is because they must compete against the growing consumer trend of using price comparison apps, says Time Moneyland’s Brad Turtle. These apps let you scan an item, compare retailers’ prices and read product reviews, which have become increasingly popular in the last year.

What’s funny, though, is how many retail stores started arming their salespeople with the same equipment. Reuters reports that companies like Lowe’s, Best Buy and Toys R Us gave their people smartphones of their own to research products, check rival’s prices and even make purchases.

More than 40 percent of retailers now have a policy of competing against lower online prices through mobile phones, according to the research firm RSR.

Lowe’s alone is using over 42,000 Apple iPhones and distributing them to 1,700 of their stores.

With the equipment, employees can engage customers more effectively by using iPhones to track down the same information consumers are tracking. They’ll also be able to quickly see if products are in stock, or still available on the website or at another nearby store.

Some companies are also allowing their employees to either match or beat prices that a consumer finds somewhere else on their phone—good news for the consumer.

Adobe says iPhone / iPad adoption and ‘alternative technologies’ (cough, HTML5) could harm its business

Adobe might continue to crow about Flash and its importance on both the desktop and mobile devices, but there’s no lying to investors, and the company is pretty blunt about the threat of the iPhone and iPad in the end-of-quarter Form 10-Q it just filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission: it flatly says that “to the extent new releases of operating systems or other third-party products, platforms or devices, such as the Apple iPhone or iPad, make it more difficult for our products to perform, and our customers are persuaded to use alternative technologies, our business could be harmed.”

Now, Adobe has to make doom-and-gloom statements in its SEC filings — it also says that slowing PC sales or a failure to keep up with desktop OS development could harm its business — but the timing is crazy here, since just yesterday Apple changed the iPhone OS 4 SDK agreement to block devs from using the upcoming Flash CS5 iPhone cross-compiler to build iPhone apps. What’s more, Apple’s also using HTML5 for its new iAd platform, which could potentially undo Flash’s stranglehold on online advertising as well. Yeah, we’d say all that plus the recent push for HTML5 video across the web — and from Microsoft — could harm Adobe’s business just a little. Better hope that final version of Flash Player 10.1 is everything we’d hoped and dreamed of, because Adobe’s going to have to make a real stand here.

Traditional ads are like homeless marketing – at best you’ve got a glance to get your message across

Homeless marketing – they hold up a sign and hope that passersby will look down, read the sign, then stop, take out their wallet, take some money out, and give it to them.  What’s the probability of that happening?  What are the chances they will even get a glance?  Same thing happens with TV ads, print ads, radio ads, and all forms of traditional push ads.  Where is the value exchange? There is none.

What viral videos look like; what non-viral videos look like — by the stats

The first 2 are viral videos – notice the shape of the “total views curve” (quick rise and approaches the max asymptotically). The last 2 videos are not viral, and supported by paid advertising and promotion. It is a straight line that grows steadily over time. The 2 examples of non-viral videos were chosen simply to have similar view counts as the first and second examples.

Frozen Grand Central ImprovEverywhere viral video – 18 million views – added on Jan 31, 2009.  “Other/viral” gave it its first big boost and embedded views gave it another big push.

No Pants Subway Ride ImprovEverywhere viral video – 9 million views – uploaded January 13, 2009; got onto YouTube homepage and got a major boost from it.

Perfect example of NON-viral video that had help with paid media – in this case, GoDaddy supported these videos with costly Superbowl ads — which led to nice bumps-up in total views.

In the case of Smirnoff’s Tea Partay, it was not supported by paid media so it took longer to grow and the shape of the curve is a nice blend between the straight line of a non-viral video and the asymptotic line of a viral video.

Finally, blatant ads don’t go viral – Sony’s grand central product demo stunt. And even if they are discussed in dozens of blogs it is not enough to get past the first tipping point.
