Five Months Later, GM Still Isn’t Buying Facebook Ads (FB, GM)

General Motors dealt a heavy blow to Facebook when it announced it would be pulling the $10 million a year it had been spending on ads with the social network days before Facebook’s IPO.

In July, the companies were talking about a rapprochement.

 It turns out that, five months later, GM still isn’t back on Facebook.

Inside Facebook reports that sales chief Carolyn Everson has reorganized her team around specific sectors, including a dedicated automotive team.

Facebook has also launched an ad exchange, which lets advertisers use third-party data to target users on the site—a feature General Motors wanted back in May.

But those efforts haven’t been enough, according to Inside Facebook:

When a reporter asked about GM pulling its ad spend, Everson confirmed that the auto company is still not advertising on Facebook but the two companies are “working incredibly closely.” She said Facebook has a team in Detroit meeting with GM every week. Until Facebook can deliver results for GM, Everson says, she doesn’t want them to spend money on advertising.

“When they spend, I want them shouting from the mountain tops that we’re their best marketing partners and they can’t live without us.”

30-story prefab skyscraper built in two weeks. Of course it’s safe!

In Changsha, China, a 30-story hotel project went from blueprint and prefab parts to finished building in fifteen days. Some are questioning how the construction project could possibly be safe, but the builder defends it. From reporter Jonathan Kaiman, the Los Angeles Times‘ man in Changsha:

In early December, Liu Zhangning was tending her cabbage patch when she saw a tall yellow construction crane in the distance. At night, the work lights made it seem like day.

Fifteen days later, a 30-story hotel towered over her village on the outskirts of the city like a glass and steel obelisk.

“I couldn’t really believe it,” Liu said. “They built that thing in under a month.”

Even After Shutting Down, LimeWire Can't Catch a BreakLimeWire has been kaput as a file-sharing service since October but that hasn’t stopped its legal woes. Now, after settling with the RIAA to the tune of $105 million, the MPAA and a host of indie music labels have filed lawsuits against the company as well. Talk about beating a dead horse.

Six studios—Twentieth Century Fox, Viacom, Comedy Partners, Disney, Paramount Pictures, and Warner Brothers—have filed suit, citing the court’s summary judgement in the RIAA case as basis for their claims. In that case, the court concluded that LimeWire “intentionally encouraged direct infringement.” Now, the court will have to decide LimeWire’s culpability in the illicit trade of movies and TV shows as well.

In addition, a group of independent record labels are arguing that, because of the same summary judgement, that they too are owed $105 million. There’s no word yet on how much the MPAA is asking for in damages, but if its anything near what it enjoy threatening the common user with, LimeWire’s going to need to find some deeper pockets. More Than 250 Apple Employees Are Undercover At CES (AAPL)

Apple is famous for blowing off CES each year, but more than 250 of its employees are registered to attend this time, reports Reuters.

While the company still isn’t appearing in any official capacity to demo its products, a reporter for Paid Content saw Apple’s head of iOS product marketing, Greg Joswiak, near Sony’s booth at the convention center.

We’re not surprised by this — the convention is simply too big to ignore.
