IT Pros Are Using LinkedIn In A Surprising Way: To Shop For Enterprise Tech (LNKD)

superfly office tour

Enterprise technology is a $1 trillion market. It’s also become a hot focus for startups and investors as new tech ranging from big data to software-defined networking upend the old-school stuff.

Before writing checks for projects that may cost their companies tens of thousands up to a million dollars, IT pros will naturally do their homework.

And they are increasingly doing that homework by crawling social networks to find out what others are saying about the product.

So LinkedIn conducted a survey to find out exactly what IT pros were doing with LinkedIn and other social networks.

The results show IT professionals have three times more connections on LinkedIn than the average user, and they are using them for everything from gabbing with their peers about tech, to getting product demos.

LinkedIn hired Forrester to do one study and Research Now to do another on how IT pros use LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.

Buying new tech for employees can be daunting: there’s lots of options, complicated multi-year contracts and government regulations.

IT pros use their social network peeps to help narrow down the choices.

State of Media Employment

The internet has caused massive disruption across the media landscape, causing a surge in job insecurity at traditional establishments.

But now we have a good look at the numbers.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has put together a presentation on the recent history and direction of media jobs. It’s not pretty.

Across several different industries (radio, TV, newspapers, film, etc.) there’s been a steady downward march in employment.

Total media jobs peaked at the beginning of the decade.

Employment in the book/periodical/music industry has been on a steady downward trend, and in 2011 the bottom completely fell out of the industry.

Sound recording? Same deal.

The Paris Motor Show just wrapped up, and now automakers have moved south to Sydney, where the Australian International Motor Show starts tomorrow.

For the occasion, Lexus is continuing its tour of the LF-CC, its high-end hybrid concept. First revealed in Detroit in January, the LF-LC is back with an update.

The latest take on the concept is the LF-LC Blue, a sports version with a new color and a more powerful battery pack and engine to pump out 500 bhp.

Other than that, it’s the same car, but it’s still worth a closer look.

Here’s the LF-LC in red at its Detroit debut.

Not much has changed since then, but it’s still a good looking car.

For Australia, Lexus went with ‘Opal Blue.’

How To Block Ads On YouTube And 6 Other Cool Tricks (GOOG)

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/best-youtube-plugins-2012-8

A college girl sings about YouTube editing

We love YouTube, but there’s a lot we’d change about it, too.

The ads are a little too obtrusive for us, we’d love to set a default video quality, and the famously obnoxious comments are often better left out completely.

Thankfully there are browser plugins that make it a snap to change the way you interact with the definitive video-sharing site for the better.

Stop YouTube videos from autoplaying

If you’d rather manually start YouTube videos yourself, a plugin called Flashblock can do the trick. It will keep all Flash videos from playing until you click on it.

It’s a little complicated though — it does this for all Flash video, no matter what site it appears on.

Still undeterred? Get it here >

YouTube High Definition

YouTube High Definition is a plugin that automatically plays videos at the highest possible quality. You don’t have to toggle the quality from the control panel on each YouTube video you watch.

Use AdBlock Plus to get rid of YouTube comments in Firefox

Adblock Plus is already one of the best plugins for killing ads on the web. But it has anot! her grea t application as well — crushing those vitriolic YouTube comments into dust.

Lifehacker offers the following instructions on how to make it work:

On Adblock Plus…just head to YouTube, click on the Adblock icon in your navigation bar, and hit “Easy Create Filter”. Then, just click on one of the comments and it should highlight all of them. After hitting “Add”, you should be free of YouTube comments forever.

These Are The Brands Taking Over America

Source: http://247wallst.com/2012/05/14/americas-hottest-brands/

24/7 Wall St. asked CoreBrand to identify America’s hottest brands. We wanted to know the biggest brands that were the best known and most well regarded.

Generally, most brand analysis done by the business press is biased toward dollar valuations and contributions to corporate earnings.

Obviously, financial success is one factor that demonstrates how well a brand is regarded by consumers.

But brand valuation is a financial view, and not one that relies entirely on consumer perception. Based on analysis performed by brand expert company CoreBrand, 24/7 Wall St. wanted to see brands through the eyes of the consumer.

For this reason, Corebrand examined brands from the standpoint of favorability and familiarity.

One of the most notable results of the analysis is the high ranking of brands not normally present on most highly valued brands list. When they are evaluated through the consumers’ eyes, however, brands that belong to companies that are struggling financially can still be high on a consumer-perception weighted list. These brands, naturally, are used by a large number of people. More than that, the consumer interaction with the product and services associated with the brand is positive.
