Here’s an interesting look at how the platform wars are playing out across smartphones and tablets.

GeekWire landed an internal slide from USA Today that lists how many times its application has been downloaded. USA Today has a wider, more geographically diverse readership than most other newspapers, giving us insights into the ecosystem that we might not get from the typical measurement companies.

If USA Today’s internal statistics are any indication, the Kindle Fire is blowing other Android tablets out of the water. The slide shows 260,000 downloads of its app for Kindle Fire compared with only 130,000 for other Android tablets. That’s a two-to-one ratio.

The Kindle Fire still trails the iPad by some ~2.6 million downloads, but that’s unsurprising. What’s more impressive is how much headway the Kindle Fire has made in the short time since its release.

Further, you can see that the iPhone app is still beating the Android app in downloads. And Windows Phone has a lot of work to do.

Hulu’s 2011 Revenue Comes In At $420 Million (NWS, CMCSA, DIS)

Hulu CEO Jason Kilar just revealed some big numbers from 2011 on the company’s blog.

The web video startup generated $420 million in revenue, up 60% from the year prior.

Other key stats from Kilar:

  • Hulu Plus has 1.5 million paying subscribers and is gaining at double the rate it was last year. It reached 1.5 million faster than any other video subscription service.
  • Since 2010, Hulu’s content offering has grown 40% and Hulu Plus’ has grown 105%.
  • Hulu’s business model allows them to compensate content providers 50% more per subscriber in licensing fees than its competitors.
  • The service plans to invest $500 million in content in 2012.

Here’s A Sneak Peek At Netflix’s First Big Bet On Original Programming (NFLX)

Netflix has been talking up their new original programming quite a bit, and now they’ve actually released some footage.

“Lilyhammer” tells the story of an East Coast mobster, played by “The Sopranos” actor Steven Van Zandt, who’s relocated to a small town in Norway as part of the witness protection program.

Unlike most TV shows, you’ll be able to see all eight episodes of “Lilyhammer” at once — Netflix is putting the whole series online February 6.

This seems to be a risky strategy: shows often build buzz over the course of the season, especially with a new series, and if “Lilyhammer” doesn’t catch on immediately it could have a hard time building viewership.

Netflix might be counting on a viral audience, with subscribers passing it between each other and telling their friends they need to see it. If that’s the case, it better be good.

Here’s Why The New York Times Wants To Sell Off Its Regional Papers [CHARTS]

Yesterday, the news leaked that the New York Times Company was looking to sell off its regional media group to Halifax Media Holdings.

Now we know why.

A look at the Times’ SEC filings shows that the regional media group has tanked in the past half decade, and that it was particularly devastated by the economic recession. Amid dwindling revenue across the Times’ three news segments, the Regional Media Group — which includes 16 papers from California to Florida with a combined circulation of about 433,000 — has performed the worst in recent years.

At the end of last year, revenue for the Regional Media Group had fallen to 65% of what it was in 2001, and that’s without adjusting for inflation. Further, revenue has been cut almost in half from the highs of 2006.

Though revenue began to decline starting in 2006, it took a more precipitous plunge once the recession hit. In the second quarter of 2009, revenue for the Regional Media Group was down over 25% from where it was in the same quarter the previous year.

Those extreme plunges led the New York Times Company, in their most recent annual statement, to note that they could take action if the Regional Media Group did not turn around this year. “We believe that if the Regional Media Group’s projected cash flows are not met during 2011, a goodwill impairment charge is possible in 2011,” the company wrote.

In the first three quarters of 2011, the regional group still hadn’t turned things around. While the decline in revenue for the New York Times Media Group and the New England Media Group began to slow down, the regional group’s problems kept going.

These Time Magazine Covers Explain Why Americans Know Nothing About The World

It’s not news that Time magazines uses different covers for its different regional editions, but it’s only when you gather them all together — so you can see what Europe and Asia read in Time compared to what Americans read in Time — that it becomes clear how insular the U.S. edition of Time is.

If you live abroad, the current edition of time features a dramatic picture of an Arab rebel wearing a gas mask under the headline “Revolution Redux.” In America, we got “Why anxiety is good for you”:

Hmm.

Publishing ain’t easy, of course. Editors need to pick what sells (and what sells advertising). There are good reasons why the U.S. audience won’t be as interested in Tintin as Europe’s would be, which explains why Tintin dominated the foreign Time covers on Oct. 31. In the U.S., to Time’s credit, that edition featured “The China Bubble,” a piece about whether economic growth in the East is sustainable.

That laudable example aside, however, this collection of recent Time covers does make us Americans look like we’re just not that interested in the rest of the world.

While the rest of the world gets a thoughtful piece about Islam, the U.S. gets … chores!

The Nov. 14 editions were soft features in all regions, but American exceptionalism was alive and well.
