The impact that any single marketer achieves thanks to paid promotion of a Facebook post isn’t typically made public.

Unless that marketer is the U.S. government.

Recently, a U.S. State Department program underwent scrutiny after spending over $630,000 on Facebook marketing over the course of two years, in a P.R. effort to attract foreign audiences to its Facebook pages and posts.

So how much added reach did the U.S. State Department achieve when they did pay up?

In an audit of the Facebook campaign, the U.S. State Department Inspector General revealed that with paid promotion, two posts from earlier this year gained a 1,000% larger audience than they would have attracted as unpaid media.

Why did the U.S. government spend so much on Facebook?

The Bureau Of International Information Programs, like many Facebook marketers, found itself having to fork over much more money after September 2012, when Facebook made chan! ges to i ts algorithm, which decides the posts that show up on user news feeds. (Facebook made similar changes more recently┬árelated to “story bumping,” which mean marketers have to compete with a greater number of older posts for user News Feed spots.)

The findings reveal just how high the stakes are for content marketers on Facebook as they try to decide whether to put dollars behind their content. If they don’t pay up, their audiences are significantly reduced.

Google+ Local sees reviews from friends, Zagat invade your restaurant hunts (video)

We’d been wondering what Google would do following its acquisition of Zagat, and now we know: it’s part of Google+ Local, a boost to Maps, general search, and Google+ itself. Zagat’s point system now automatically shows up in search results for restaurants that have been given the extra scrutiny. Those of us who don’t trust The Man for reviews will also now see Google+ friends’ picks surface at the same time. The addition is considered important enough that Google is even adding a Local tab on Google+ just to show recommendations, so you won’t have to abandon your constant updating (you’re always posting on Google+, right?) to find a well-rated sushi place. Local should be live soon, if not now, and will make search plus Your World that much more omnipresent.

The End Of Google Search Is In The Palm Of Your Hand (GOOG, AAPL)

The funny thing about anti-trust cases against technology businesses is that technology businesses may sometimes monopolize a platform – but the platforms they monopolize are always on fire.

In the 1990s, Microsoft came under attack because Windows dominated the PC. 

But then the Internet made the operating system you use to access it from your PC irrelevant.

Now Google is getting scrutiny in Washington and in Europe because it owns so much of the search market.

But did you know that you hold the end of Google search is already in the palm of your hand?

Google makes money because people search the Web for stuff they want to buy (or for information about stuff they want to buy). Google brings them back a list of Web pages and ads. The ads are often as relevant to these commercial Web searches and the links, and so users click on them, ringing Google’s cash register.

But here’s the thing. I buy lots of stuff on the Internet, almost. I buy groceries. I buy movie tickets. I buy plane tickets. I book golf tee times. I order pizza. I buy Christmas presents from Amazon.

Google doesn’t take part in any of the transactions at all.

That’s because I do all this commerce not through the Web or through Google search; I do it through apps on my phone.

Now, at some point, I do search for these apps, just like I would search for Web pages. But I don’t use Google search to find them. I use Apple’s Apple Store.

My search results look like this.

Right now, Apple isn’t showing any ads in them, but that’ll change. When it does, it will mean less money for Google ads.

The good news for Google is that its mobile operating system, Android, owns a healthy slice of the smartphone market. It will be able to put ads in its own app store.

The bad news is that share is much smaller than its market share in search, where it also faces much weaker competition.
