slot
That svelte, pixel-dense MacBook Pro with Retina Display sure is a beaut, ain’t she? Yep, that’s what everyone thinks. Especially thieves. But without a Kensington Security Slot, how oh how will you be able to lock your more than two thousand dollar investment? With ugly, horrible plastic.
It’s the only way. Well, it’s the only way right now as MacLock is the first company to introduce a laptop lock for the new MBP that’s… an inelegant solution, to say the least. The way the lock works is you have to add “an extremely lightweight security skin” to the base of your MBP which if you don’t understand Marketingspeak means “a horrifying plastic layer gets permanently plastered on your beautiful MacBook”. MacLock says the bottom piece, made of polymer, actually improves the cooling of your laptop. Again, Marketingspeak translation: we know this is awful but at least it won’t burn your nuts off. Then a security cable is attached to the plastic laptop condom and then you can pretend you’re safe (when you’re really not) by attaching it to your coffee cup or something.
Yeah, it sucks that Apple didn’t include a Kensington Security Slot with the new MBP (or MBAs, for that matter) but you don’t want to compound that problem by making the new MBP more awful. That’s like solving a problem by creating another one. [MacLocks via 9to5Mac]
AMC’s Advertising Shows Are A Mess
Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-amcs-advertising-shows-are-a-mess-2012-5

Early last week, we chronicled how AMC’s advertising competition show, The Pitch, had some seriously awful ratings.
The low ratings prompted AMC to move The Pitch from its Monday time slot to Sundays, following AMC’s other advertising show, Mad Men.
It’s hard to say the move didn’t work—viewership has doubled— but a new trend is emerging: Mad Men is struggling.
The most recent episode, which aired on Sunday, had just under two million viewers or one-third less viewers for when Mad Men first aired a one-hour episode this season on March 25. (It’s an over 45% drop-off from the 3.535 million viewers Mad Men claimed during its two-hour premier in March.)
It should be noted Mad Men debuted with record ratings and is still beating last season’s average. Although Netflix took credit for an added million viewers, i.e. the bulk of the difference between the record premiere and last season’s average.
We’ve mentioned it a few times before, but advertising shows traditionally do not work.
Despite not having a single positive trend in ratings since the season began, Mad Men will fare a lot better than The Pitch, which has failed to cross the 0.1 threshold from Nielsen since its debut while being described as an oversimplification, outdated and phantasmagoricaly awful from critics.

Fraudsters Now Using 3D Printers To Make Authentic Looking ATM Skimmers [Scams]
Source: http://gizmodo.com/5866491/fraudsters-now-using-3d-printers-to-make-authentic-looking-atm-skimmers
What looks like the card slot from a Chase Bank ATM is actually a sophisticated card skimmer removed from a branch in West Hills, California. And police believe a 3D printer may have been used to create it.
Those green bulbous card slots that were supposed to make it very difficult for a card skimmer to be attached to an ATM have turned out to be just a minor inconvenience for sophisticated thieves. Investigators believe this skimmer—which perfectly fits over the ATM’s regular slot— was created from a mould that came from a 3D printer. Which means those behind this particular ATM scheme had some very expensive tools at their disposal.
In addition to being a perfect replica of the ATM’s standard card slot, this skimmer incorporates a small pinhole camera that starts recording the PIN pad whenever a card is inserted. On the underside is a series of holes that investigators believe allowed the thieves to download data and footage, but the complex electronics on the inside may have been salvaged from a cellphone, giving this skimmer wireless connectivity. So in the future, like in many situations, make sure you take a good look at the hardware before you stick your thing in the slot. [KrebsonSecurity via BoingBoing]

HP Mini 311 RAM can be upgraded
The HP Mini 311 (or Compaq Mini 311C in Europe) comes with 1GB of RAM soldered to the motherboard. At first glance, that might make this NVIDIA ION-powered laptop a bit less attractive, since it somewhat limits your upgrade options. But Blogeee reports there’s good news: There is another RAM slot that users can take advantage of to upgrade the RAM.
All you have to do is pop open the back and slide in a 2GB module to upgrade the memory to 3GB.

Samsung’s SCH-W880 12 megapixel phonecamera with 3x optical zoom
Source: http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/28/samsungs-sch-w880-12-megapixel-phonecamera-with-3x-optical-zoom/

In a welcome reversal of trends, Samsung just stuffed a 3G cellphone into a 12 megapixel camera making this M8920 / SCH-W880 more of a camera than most 12 megapixel cameraphones can claim. While this presumed follow-up to Samsung’s Pixon 12 (M8910) isn’t official, the announcement looks imminent based on the leaked collateral above and the spyshots that emerged over the weekend. What’s impressive here is that extending 3x optical zoom — something carried over from the SCH-B600 — and dedicated camera controls like a mode dial, shutter and zoom, and big 3.3-inch WVGA AMOLED display. Rounding out the specs are HD (720p presumably) video, HSDPA data, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, microSD slot, and DMB mobile television; that latter spec making this Korea-only whenever it does launch. See her in the wild after the break.
