Zynga Q2 Earnings Results Show Continued Struggles (TechCrunch)
Zynga reported its second quarter results. The social gaming company posted a revenue decline of 31% year-over-year as well as a net loss of about $16 million. Its inability to convert its portfolio of games to the mobile platform has been the biggest issue for the company over the past year. Now, it faces greater competition in the mobile arena from King (Candy Crush Saga) and Kabam. The major launch of Draw Something 2 failed to bring in an audience. Desperate For Revenue, Facebook Turns To The Gambling Business… (FB)

Facebook is going into the gambling business.

Starting today, report Christopher Thompson and April Dembosky of the FT, Facebook will allow users in the UK to play bingo for real money. Real-money slot machines will soon follow.

Gambling is much more socially and legally acceptable in the UK than in the US, where legislators pretend that it’s immoral to gamble outside of Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and some Indian reservations. The same legislators have no issue with lotteries, which encourage citizens to throw hard-earned money down rat holes to raise additional state tax revenue.

But still, gambling is a risque behavior to cash in on, especially for a mainstream consumer company like Facebook.

Industry insiders have long expected Facebook to turn to gambling at some point, and they have high hopes for it. Earlier this year, in Europe, one insider predicted that gambling would eventually turn Facebook into a $100 billion business.

Facebook’s Bingo gambling will be conducted in partnership with a company called Gamesys, one of the UK’s biggest online gambling companies. The game will be called Bingo Friendzy.

Facebook will presumably collect a ~30% “vig” from the money spent to play Bingo on the Facebook platform, the same way it collects a portion of the virtual goods revenue its social-gaming partners generate in the U.S. This revenue will help fortify Facebook’s “payments” revenue stream, which has recently been crippled by the collapse of Zynga! .

Meanwhile, one company that appears to have been left out in the cold here is Zynga, Facebook’s big game partner in the US. Zynga has also been eager to cash in on the online gambling craze. But it will apparently be watching this Facebook move from the sidelines.

Facebook And Zynga Have Finally Launched Their Ad Partnership (FB, ZNGA)

It’s been more than two years in the making, but Zynga, the giant social-gaming company, has finally started running ads placed by Facebook.

Inside Facebook first noticed that the social network’s targeted ads now appear on Zynga.com. They’re pretty much identical to the Sponsored Stories and other ad formats Facebook displays on its own site, and indeed, Facebook’s Help Center tells users that these are the “same ads you see on Facebook.com.”

In March 2010, after resolving a dispute over the cut Facebook would get from Zynga’s virtual-currency sales, the two companies signed a long-term agreement to cooperate.

In 2011, Zynga revealed details of the agreement in an amended S-1 filing, showing that Zynga and Facebook had agreed to share advertising revenues if Facebook sold ads on Zynga websites.

AllThingsD suggests that this might be the start of a Facebook-run ad network, similar to Google’s AdSense, in which Facebook would place ads on all kinds of third-party sites. That’s not exactly a new notion: As early as 2007, speculation was rife in Silicon Valley that Facebook would launch a third-party ad network. The real surprise is how cautious the move-fast-and-break-things hackers at Facebook have been about introducing one.

Even now, caution abides: It’s not a given that this effort will expand past Zynga, but given the preexisting agreement between the companies, Zynga’s a logical place to test.

Google Quietly Invests Over 0 Million in Zynga, Readying Google GamesWhoa. TechCrunch reports that Google has invested between $100 and $200 million in Zynga, the social gaming behemoth behind Farmville, Mafia Wars, and others, in preparation for the launch of Google Games later this year.

TechCrunch’s “multiple sources” say that Google itself, not its venture capital division Google Ventures, has invested between $100 and $200 million in Zynga, a huge power play presumably with the aim of eroding Facebook’s social media dominance.

It seems that Google sees Zynga as the best way to hit the ground running with Google Games, a social gaming service from the search company that’s set to launch later this year. TechCrunch points to this job opening for “Product Management Leader, Games” at their Mountain View campus as proof that we’ll be seeing a lot more about Google’s move into gaming in the near future.

With Google Me, the company’s purported Facebook killer, continuing to take shape, this major investment in Zynga is just further proof that Google is making a very serious effort to hit Facebook where it hurt, namely, the farms. [TechCrunch]
