Half Of The American Public Thinks Facebook Is A Passing Fad

Despite the fact that Facebook has 900 million users, almost half of people think it’s a passing fad.
CNBC and the AP surveyed 1,003 Americans about Facebook and found 46% think it will fade away. Amusingly, only 31% of the people surveyed think it’s a bad investment.

Heavier cars use more fuel. Now some bright spark has calculated that the US uses one billion gallons more gas every year than if the entire population had remained at the average weight of the 1960s. For every extra pound added to the average weight, the country uses another 39 million gallons of fuel each year.
So complain about gas prices if you must, but the rapid increase you should really be worried about is your waistline. [The Atlantic]

This chart shows preliminary smartphone shipment estimates for Q1 from analyst Horace Dediu of Asymco. As you can see, it’s a two horse race. Everyone else is irrelevant.

Bad news for cable TV. According to a new report, some 2.65 million subscribers have abandoned cable or satellite TV since 2008 in favor of Internet and over the air delivery. Nearly half of that, 1.05 million, came in 2011 alone. Another million or so customers are expected to do so by the end of 2012. [Convergence Online via Bloomberg]
