Alec Saunders, VP of Developer Relations, just took the stage at RIM’s DevCon gathering in Amsterdam to build up and promptly knock down a few “myths” about RIM’s state of health. First up, he tackled the notion that BlackBerry is a declining platform by saying that App World is seeing six million downloads per day, which is up 30 percent from three months ago. He also rejected the idea that BB app devs don’t make money, revealing that 13 percent of them have made over $100,000 from their products and that App World generates 40 percent more revenue than the Android Market. Lastly, Saunders said “we’re sorry” that RIM’s strategy has been “hard to understand” for “some people”, but added that BB 10 will solve that problem. He said that the new OS represents a “simple and easy-to-understand strategy” that is about combining the best of QNX and the current BB OS, offering consistent cloud services and making software that is both backwards and forwards compatible.

The New BlackBerry Ad Campaign Is Proof RIM Has Entirely Lost ItSay hello to The Bold Team. Sadly, this animated foursome is RIM’s attempt to capture the youth market. They urge the younger generation to “Be Bold”. Something tells me it won’t work.

This pink and purple mess looks a bit like an advertising executive just vomited his late-night cocktail onto a page and presented it to RIM. “That’ll do,” he probably thought. “They’re shafted anyway.”

The Bold Team are “bravely stepping out of 2011 and into 2012 filled with unlimited possibilities”. If you care to know more about RIM’s answer to the Power Rangers, there are four of them. You want a quick run through their biographies? Sure, there’s:

GoGo Girl, The Achiever: “Saving the day with a brilliant strategy”
Justin Steele, The Advocate: “Always ready to stick up for his friends”
Trudy Foreal, The Authentic: “Not afraid to call it as she sees it”.
Max Stone, The Adventurer: “Able to jump out of a plane…”

Presumably Max Stone is inspired by the RIM employees who got drunk on that plane.

A company which is shedding customers quicker than the Costa Concordia lost passengers, seeing its stock price fall week-on-week, and drafting in replacement CEOs, you’d expect to put some effort into advertising. Obviously not. RIM is completely out of touch. [Mobile Syrup via Pocket Lint]

Strategy Analytics has come out with another report on the state of today’s tablet market, which, not surprisingly, remains dominated by Apple. Cupertino’s iOS comprised about 58 percent of the global slate market during Q4 2011 — well ahead of Android’s record high 39 percent share, but down from the 68 percent it commanded during the final quarter of 2010. Android, in fact, has seen quite a jump over the past year, with total shipments reaching 105 million units during the last quarter, up from just 3.1 million last year (Apple, by comparison, shipped 15.4 million iPads during Q4, versus the 7.3 million it shipped last year). On a global level, the tablet market continues to blossom, with total shipments reaching an all-time high of 26.8 million units last quarter, representing a whopping 150 percent increase over last year. Here’s A Sneak Peek At Netflix’s First Big Bet On Original Programming (NFLX)

Netflix has been talking up their new original programming quite a bit, and now they’ve actually released some footage.

“Lilyhammer” tells the story of an East Coast mobster, played by “The Sopranos” actor Steven Van Zandt, who’s relocated to a small town in Norway as part of the witness protection program.

Unlike most TV shows, you’ll be able to see all eight episodes of “Lilyhammer” at once — Netflix is putting the whole series online February 6.

This seems to be a risky strategy: shows often build buzz over the course of the season, especially with a new series, and if “Lilyhammer” doesn’t catch on immediately it could have a hard time building viewership.

Netflix might be counting on a viral audience, with subscribers passing it between each other and telling their friends they need to see it. If that’s the case, it better be good.

Google Is Getting Ready To Take On Amazon…In Shipping? (GOOG, AMZN)

Google is talking to major retailers like Macy’s, the Gap, and OfficeMax to offer customers one-day shipping when they buy products after finding them through Google searches.

It sounds a lot like Amazon Prime, Amazon’s $79-per-year service that offers fast shipping and other benefits.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the service, and confirmed that Macy’s had been approached by Google to participate.

The next-day shipping will apparently be combined with Google Product Search, which today lets users find products and compare them across different e-commerce sites to get the lowest price. When people buy a product from one of the sites after finding it on Google Product Search, they’ll get an offer for one day shipping for a low fee, the Journal says.

Google won’t be running an e-commerce site or stocking products in warehouses like Amazon does, but will instead create a system that figures out which retail partner’s stores are nearest to a customer and have the product in stock. Then it would team up with UPS and local couriers for delivery.

Still, e-commerce fulfillment is a pretty big step removed from Google’s core mission of organizing the world’s information. Lack of focus has been a problem for the company, and CEO Larry Page has killed a lot of non-core products this year

Samsung Rockets Past Apple To Take The Lead In Smartphones (AAPL)

Smartphone shipments for Q3

We knew this was coming, but now it’s more official-ish.

Samsung is the world’s biggest smartphone dealer, beating Apple soundly in the third quarter of this year, according to data compiled by Strategy Analytics.

Strategy Analytics says Samsung “shipped” 28 million smartphones versus Apple’s 17.1 million.

Tiny caveat: In its earnings release Apple says it sold 17.1 million smartphones. We don’t think Samsung is stuffing 11 million smartphones in the channel to take the top spot, but it’s worth making a note of the distinction in language.

Apple was the top smartphone dealer in Q2, but it had a down quarter as consumers waited for the iPhone 4S. It’s unlikely to return to the top spot unless it has a mammoth fourth quarter.

And for all the Apple bulls out there who will predictably say, “So what, Apple has all the profits.” You’re right! Apple earns considerably more more money on the iPhone than Samsung earns on smartphones.

However, as we’ve pointed out over and over: This is a platform war. The more success Samsung has with the Android platform, the worse it is for Apple and iOS.

And the more phones Samsung sells, the fewer iPhones Apple can sell.

Microsoft Xbox No Longer A Money Pit, Now Making A Billion Annually (MSFT)

While Microsoft‘s online division remains a money pit, the gaming division is starting to make a lot of money for Microsoft. Last night the company reported $679 million in operating income giving it a trailing-four-quarter profit just over $1 billion.

Considering the company lost money for years on the Xbox (we’re only showing part of the money burn), this is great news for shareholders, and it provides a sliver of a reason for optimism about the online division. Maybe it too will get turned around some day.

Everything Wrong With The Steve Ballmer Era On Display At D8Today at the All Things D conference we saw a snapshot of what’s wrong with Microsoft under Steve Ballmer’s tenure.

Walt Mossberg asked Steve Ballmer and Ray Ozzie, Microsoft’s chief software architect, what they thought of Google, Android, and Chrome.

Everything Wrong With The Steve Ballmer Era On Display At D8Ballmer yammered away about how Google’s strategy of having two operating systems doesn’t make any sense. Why have Android and Chrome? Why do two operating systems like that? Makes no sense, he says,

After Ballmer is done, Ray Ozzie says, Chrome is a bet on the future, Android is a bet on the past.

We can’t think of a better illustration of the Ballmer-era.

A competitor announces something innovative. Ballmer goes out in public, plays dumb, trashes it, acts like he doesn’t think it makes any sense, even though it does.

Remember his quote on the $500 iPhone? On Android being free? Ballmer likes to laugh at his rivals, only to become the laughingstock years later.

Chrome doesn’t make sense today. But it will make a lot of sense in the future when browsers are more powerful and web-based applications are more robust.

Obviously Ray Ozzie gets this. Why doesn’t Steve Ballmer?

Interestingly, before the interview started Ina Fried at CNet wrote that Ray and Steve don’t talk very much. Clearly, that needs to change.
