They’re not so willing when it comes to giving up privacy to retailers

Most internet users in Canada assume conducting virtually any activity online—from participating on social media to sending an email to making a purchase—will result in a loss of privacy. But it doesn’t deter them from their digital habits.

In the aftermath of public revelations that the US National Security Agency has been monitoring normal online activities for many US residents, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) commissioned Ipsos Reid to query web users in Canada about their assumptions about privacy online. And the July 2013 survey found a strong tendency among respondents to assume little such privacy existed.

Women were more likely than men to agree that they lost their privacy when they went online, as were older internet users compared to younger ones. And respondents in Quebec were significantly less likely than those in any other province to believe they lost their privacy when they went online.

Overall, 55% of internet users reported being OK with that tradeoff—and the percentages were higher among those who were heavy users of social media, as well as among those who generally agreed that government monitoring of email was generally acceptable. But that doesn’t mean they were equally happy to lose their privacy to advertisers or merchants. While 59% of respondents thought it was acceptable to trade privacy for security, just 20% said they would exchange privacy for retail purposes.

Teenagers are flocking to mobile services that peel away many of the features at the heart of Facebook. Like most trends in the tech industry, the fragmentation of social media has started with the youngest users and is working its way up the age chain.

Right now, cross-posting softens some! of the edges of competition. For example, your Tumblr and Pinterest updates can automatically be cross-posted to Facebook. However,¬†given the spate of conflicts between networks recently, one shouldn’t assume cross-posting will always be allowed.

As we argue in our report, we may be witnessing is the unraveling of a unitary, centralized social media landscape, dominated by Facebook, into a set of multipolar nodes. Facebook warded off the Instagram threat by buying the company, but it won’t always be possible for the company to neutralize threats with acquisitions.

The Reason Larry Page Doesn’t Want Googlers Thinking About The Competition Is Pretty Inspiring (GOOG)

During an interview with Fortune’s Miguel Helft, Google CEO Larry Page is transparently reluctant to talk about who he thinks is Google’s competition.

Helft asks him: “Is it Siri? Is it Amazon or commercial queries?”

Page tries to dodge the question, saying: “I don’t really think about it that way.”

Helf presses: “Because you don’t think about competition?”

And then Page drops this doozy, which is pretty inspirational for people in the tech industry:

“Obviously we think about competition to some extent.”

“But I feel my job is mostly getting people not to think about our competition. In general I think there’s a tendency for people to think about the things that exist. Our job is to think of the thing you haven’t thought of yet that you really need. And by definition, if our competitors knew that thing, they wouldn’t tell it to us or anybody else. I think just our strengths, our weaknesses, our opportunities are different than any other company.”

(Of course the truth is that lots of Googlers do think about the competition, and when they do, it’s mostly about Amazon lately. The reason: Google makes its money from commercial web searches, and increasingly people are just going straight to Amazon.com for that.)

Internal Microsoft Kin testing videos offer a new look at what went wrong

The downfall of Microsoft’s Kin smartphones is a fairly well-known story at this point, and something that Microsoft would no doubt prefer to forget, but details have a tendency to keep trickling out. The latest comes courtesy of Wired’s Gadget Lab, which has obtained some previously unseen internal testing videos that paint a bleak picture of the problems Microsoft was facing. While the devices in question are pre-production models, they’re said to be “changed very little from the shipping product” and, as you can see in the videos, they didn’t exactly make a good impression on the product testers. Words like “lag” and “frustrating” are the common theme, with one tester adding: “I can imagine my daughter would give this back very quickly.” Of course, these are just a small sample of what were undoubtedly many testing sessions, but the complaints are remarkably similar to those we’d see when the phones were ultimately released. Facebook could be looking to buy Opera browserSince its IPO earlier this month, Facebook has wasted no time in expanding its empire — it’s already purchased the Karma mobile gifting service and launched a standalone camera app — and talk about the social network’s next steps doesn’t seem to be quieting down. The latest rumor, from Pocket Lint, says Facebook is looking to buy the Opera browser as part of its larger effort to compete against Google, Mozilla and other internet mammoths. According to a source at Opera Software who spoke with Pocket Lint, the company is shopping around for potential buyers and has even imposed a hiring freeze. While it’s not too hard to believe that Facebook is readying its horse to enter the browser race, this rumor is just that: a rumor. But given the social network’s tendency to whip out new features at warp speed, we should have something more solid than speculation soon — if the Opera purchase story has any legs, that is.
