This ‘SHCOOL X-ING’ Sign Has Been Posted Outside A New York School For Months

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/this-shcool-x-ing-sign-has-been-posted-outside-a-new-york-school-for-months-2012-1

School Crossing

There are many signs that America’s schools are crappy — and now, thanks to a spelling gaffe outside a Lower East Side high school, we are seeing that trend physically manifest itself on the sidewalks of New York City.

Yesterday, The Lo-Down’s Erin Rodriguez spotted a crossing sign outside Marta Valle High School incorrectly spelled “SHCOOL X-NG.”

Jennifer Bain and Jeane Macintosh of The New York Post picked up the story about the embarrassing spelling error, which has apparently gone unnoticed by school officials for months.

The Post says Marte Valle officials could not be reached, but a spokesman from the Department of Transportation told the publication that the error was made by a utility provider—not the city—after construction was done on the street over the summer.

The DOT says it is now working on correcting the mistake.

A Raid On A Luxury Ski Resort Has Uncovered The True Scale Of Tax Evasion In Italy

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/italy-tax-ski-resort-2012-1

italy ski resort

A raid by Italian tax officials on a luxury ski resort revealed dire rates of tax evasion, reports the Telegraph

Officials traced the license plates of several of the Lamborginis, Ferraris and other high-end vehicles that lined the streets of Cortina d’Ampezzo, a popular ski resort among wealthy Italians. In all, 133 vehicles were investigated; the owners of 42 of these were found to have reported annual salaries of less than $28,000 a year.

The investigators also reportedly found that hotels, restaurants and boutiques in the resort were wildly under-declaring how much income they were generating.

For example, Reuters reports that restaurants being studied by authorities were issuing sales receipts amounting to 300 percent more sales than the previous year. This demonstrated the fact that such establishments had not previously issued sales receipts in order to cut down their tax bills.

The news wire also added that tax evasion is becoming such a severe problem in Italy that the government is installing special dogs at borders, designed to sniff out bank notes with the aim of stopping people smuggling their savings abroad.

The Capital Network That Runs The World

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/capitalist-network-runs-the-world-2011-10

There really is a secret capital network that runs the world, according to an analysis published in the esteemed New Scientist (via Patrick.net).

The work revealed a core of 1318 companies with interlocking ownerships. Each of the 1318 had ties to two or more other companies, and on average they were connected to 20. What’s more, although they represented 20 per cent of global operating revenues, the 1318 appeared to collectively own through their shares the majority of the world’s large blue chip and manufacturing firms – the “real” economy – representing a further 60 per cent of global revenues.

When the team further untangled the web of ownership, it found much of it tracked back to a “super-entity” of 147 even more tightly knit companies – all of their ownership was held by other members of the super-entity – that controlled 40 per cent of the total wealth in the network. “In effect, less than 1 per cent of the companies were able to control 40 per cent of the entire network,” says Glattfelder. Most were financial institutions. The top 20 included Barclays Bank, JPMorgan Chase & Co, and The Goldman Sachs Group.

While the existence of a core capitalist network isn’t surprising, this is the first time it has been mapped and quantified.

Here are the 1318 companies that control (60 percent of) world assets, with the really powerful companies in red.

Best Buy / Circuit City stores physically touching each other

IMG_6482-bestbuy-circuitcit

this is on Fifth Avenue between 43rd and 44th streets in New York City.

In thinking about retail … this helps illustrate the tremendous challenges they face.

– online switching costs are pretty much zero — just type another URL; these two stores are physically touching — just walk next door

– they carry much of the same inventory from plasma TVs to computers to home stereo equipment to software, CDs, DVDs, etc.

– they both sell Apple iPods; consumers have already decided to buy an iPod for Christmas (for some reason), which store do they walk into? what differentiates the store with the blue awning from the one with silver letters? they both have “black friday” discounts but the price ended up to be about $1 from each other; both have geeks on staff, one called Geek Squad and the other Fire Dog

– and then there’s Amazon.com which is tax free and offers free 2nd day shipping.

THIS is a challenging marketing problem for retailers such as the ones pictured!
