California Regulators Are Fining Uber, Lyft, And SideCar

The California Public Utilities Commission has cited and fined Uber, Lyft, and SideCar, three San Francisco-based startups offering on-demand transportation through mobile apps, TechCrunch reports.

Lyft and SideCar, which let any car owner sign up as drivers to offer rides, received fines of $20,000, the companies told TechCrunch. Uber, which contracts with professional limo drivers, maintains that it’s not subject to regulation by the PUC, which already regulates its drivers.

The commission is classifying the companies as “charter-party carriers.”

The companies argue that such rules don’t apply to them, because they’re offering an Internet-based service to connect riders and drivers.

The city of San Francisco has generally proven friendlier to its local startups. It’s formed a “collaborative consumption” task force to come up with a framework for handling ride-sharing services and other new businesses like Airbnb which run up against older regulations.

In Boston this fall, you won’t need to keep up with your train ticket anymore — as long as you don’t leave your smartphone at home. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and Masabi have joined forces to bring a rail ticketing to handheld devices via iPhone, Android and BlackBerry apps. Headquartered in London, Masabi has launched similar tech for transit companies in the UK, eliminating ticket lines for many smartphone-wielding passengers. Software will allow riders to purchase tickets and passes that are validated with a barcode scan by conductors equipped with mobile devices of their own. MBTA is looking to cut costs and provide added convenience with the new system instead of adding more ticketing kiosks to its stations. The aforementioned apps will be developed alongside focus groups and a small pilot group this summer with a full rollout to all MBTA customers expected to happen this fall. school crossing This SHCOOL X ING Sign Has Been Posted Outside A New York School For Months

There are many signs that America’s schools are crappy — and now, thanks to a spelling gaffe outside a Lower East Side high school, we are seeing that trend physically manifest itself on the sidewalks of New York City.

Yesterday, The Lo-Down’s Erin Rodriguez spotted a crossing sign outside Marta Valle High School incorrectly spelled “SHCOOL X-NG.”

Jennifer Bain and Jeane Macintosh of The New York Post picked up the story about the embarrassing spelling error, which has apparently gone unnoticed by school officials for months.

The Post says Marte Valle officials could not be reached, but a spokesman from the Department of Transportation told the publication that the error was made by a utility provider—not the city—after construction was done on the street over the summer.

The DOT says it is now working on correcting the mistake.

Groupon Deal Strands Customers In Vegas [Social Networks]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5844103/groupon-deal-strands-customers-in-las-vegas

lvgroupon Groupon Deal Strands Customers In Vegas [Social Networks]Several Internet bargain hunters wanting to visit Vegas on the cheap found out the hard way that some deals are just too good to be true.

Several Groupon and Voice Daily Deals Users users bought round-trip bus tickets from Southern California to Las Vegas for $45. The price was great, but the trip was a mini disaster due to the negligence of LUX Ground Transportation, the bus company that provided the deal.

The problems started right at the beginning with many buses arriving hours later than scheduled or, sometimes, not showing up at all. When the buses did arrive, they brought their passengers safely to Las Vegas, but never returned to bring them home. Oops.

All’s well that ends well, though. A shuttle from another company was called in to rescue these abandoned passengers. And Groupon eventually canceled the deal and refunded customer’s money. LUX didn’t fare as well. It appears the company was operating without a business license and has shuttered its doors now that the world’s eyes are upon it. [MSNBC]
