Facebook Ads Are About To Get A Whole Lot More Attractive

Facebook announced a partnership with Shutterstock today that will allow ad makers to use the site’s images for free. 

Marketers can now access Shutterstock’s inventory of millions of high-quality images directly through Facebook’s ad creation tool. The social network says the new feature will be particularly helpful for small businesses, which may not have previously had the resources to procure quality images for their ads.

This is also good news for Facebook users: Those sidebar ads are probably going to start looking a lot more attractive.

Advertisers will also now be able to upload multiple images with the ad creation tool in order to test which one works best.

“As the digital world becomes increasingly visual, businesses need images to stand out and reach new audiences,” said David Fraga, Shutterstock’s vice president of corporate development. “Not every business has a team of designers to help communicate their message, and so the Shutterstock integration allows Facebook advertisers of all sizes to search and choose from millions of high-quality images at the point of ad creation.”

Being a Netflix subscriber is almost like being cursed — sure, you have access to untold troves of streaming TV shows and films, but how do you choose what to watch? The burden of choice weighs heavily on the indecisive Netflix user, trapping them in a labyrinth of enticing categories, familiar recommendations and episode backlogs. Admit it, you don’t know jack about picking out a good flick, which is exactly why Netflix created Max, a comedic recommendation engine that gamifies movie night with quick choices, mini games and quirky humor.

Netflix Vice President of Product Innovation Todd Yellin caught up with us at E3 earlier this month to give us a brief demo of the upcoming feature. Yellin parked us in front of a PS3 to demonstrate, pointing out that our screen’s topmost category had been replaced by a larger banner. “My mother wanted me to be a lawyer,” the Play Max prompt reads. “But my dream is to help you find great stuff to watch.” Quirky. Yellin tells us that this is one of several boiler plates the streaming menu provides to lure users into trying Max. A cheeky button beneath the dialogue encourage us to “live our dreams” and give the content recommendation game a spin. Sure, why not?

AMD hires chip experts from Qualcomm and Apple, aims to move beyond the PC

Even more transfer news from chipmakers, although this one isn’t quite as litigious. AMD has hired two senior engineers with experience at both Qualcomm and Apple. The hires have been confirmed by AMD, which added that the new recruits would help the chipmaker expand into new markets — though the spokesperson didn’t specify what these markets would be. Charles Matar, with expertise in low-power and embedded chip design will join from Qualcomm as AMD’s new vice president of SoC Development, while Wayne Meretsky, formerly of Apple, was named vice president of software IP development. AMD still derives around 80 percent of its revenue from PCs, a market that continues to slow as smartphones and tablets continue to flourish. Both will likely be involved in the development of whatever AMD’s got planned for after Temash.

Samsung spinning off LCD business

When the Korea Exchange asked Sammy about rumors of an impending spin-off of its LCD business, the firm said it was a move it was considering. Well, consider it done — today Samsung announced it would be launching Samsung Display on April 1st, 2012 with $6.6 billion in its coffers. The move is still waiting for shareholder approval, but Donggun Park, executive vice president of Samsung’s LCD business, seems optimistic. “The spin-off will allow us to make quicker business decisions and respond to our clients’ needs more swiftly.” This decision comes just months after Sammy agreed to take Sony’s stake in S-LCD, turning the former display partnership into a fully owned subsidiary. "We Are Not Prepared"

Washington insiders recently sweated out a real-time war game where a cyberattack crippled cell phone service, Internet and even electrical grids across the U.S. The unscripted, dynamic simulation allowed former White House officials and the Bipartisan Policy Center to study the problems that might arise during a real cyberattack emergency, according to Aviation Week’s Ares Defense Blog.

The Policy Center’s vice-president reports “”The general consensus of the panel today was that we are not prepared to deal with these kinds of attacks.”

The nightmarish scenario that unfolded represented a worst-case example. As former secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff noted, many cyberattacks can be stopped if individual cell phone or Internet users simply follow the best practices and use the right tools. Similarly, another participant pointed out that private Internet companies would not sit idly by as a virus ran amok.

A collapse of power across the U.S. also only took place when the simulation brought in factors such as high demand during the summer, a hurricane that had damaged power supply lines, and coordinated bombings that accompanied the cyberattack and subsequent failure of the Internet.

Still, the war game highlighted crucial issues about the government’s own reliance upon communications that might go down during a real-life scenario. One of the biggest problems was how the President ought to respond to a situation that caused damage like warfare but lacked an immediately identifiable foreign adversary. Smaller-scale cyberattacks have already complicated real-world diplomacy, such as the alleged Chinese cyberattacks on Google and other U.S. companies.

Ares Defense Blog questioned a curious missing element from the simulation, in that there was no mention of what happened to phone or Internet service in the rest of the world. Surely a nation that decided to launch cyberattacks against the U.S. would take safeguards to protect its own crucial communication services, which would possibly help U.S. officials narrow down the list of suspects.

Another question seemed more mundane but equally important — how would the government activate the National Guard with cell phone service down?

The Pentagon’s DARPA science lab recently pushed for a “Cyber Genome Program” that could trace digital fingerprints to cyberattack culprits. But identifying whether a cyber attack came from individual civilians, shadowy hacker associations or government cyber-warriors has proven tricky in the meantime.
