TED.com is just about the best place to hang out online if you have a few minutes to kill.

That’s because it offers free recorded lectures given by brilliant people doing amazing things in areas including technology, entertainment, design, business, science, and global issues.

And what’s cool about it is the talks are tagged so if you’re in the mood for something inspiring or funny, for example, you can get just the kinds of videos to do the trick.

Here are a handful of insightful TED talks posted this year that every entrepreneur should check out.

Shawn Achor explains how to change your perception of reality to produce better work.

Psychologist Shawn Achor doubles as a comedian in this talk, during which he says the lens through which your brain views the world shapes your reality.

“And if we can change the lens not only can we change your happiness, but we can change every single educational and business outcome at the same time,” he says in this highly entertaining video.

Drew Curtis discusses how he defended his business from a patent troll.

When Fark.com was sued by a patent troll “…for the creation and distribution of news releases via email” alongside companies such as Yahoo, MSN, Reddit, AOL, and TechCrunch, the eight-person company stood its ground.

“I had hoped to team up with some of these larger companies and defend against this lawsuit but one by one they settled out of the case even though not one of these companies infringed on the patent,” says Drew Curtis, founder of Fark.

The reason? The average troll defense costs $2 million and takes 18 months if you win. He proves that little guys don’t have to let themselves get bullied with ! frivolou s lawsuits.

Julia Burstein gives 4 lessons in creativity.

In this inspiring talk, radio host and book author Julie Burstein gives voice to several interviews with remarkably talented people who found that creativity grows when you pay attention to the world around you, learn from challenges, push against the limits of what you can do as well as the hardest thing of all—embrace loss.”

“We have to stand in that space between what we see in the world and what we hope for, looking squarely at rejection, at heartbreak, at war, at death,” she says.

As Facebook announced its one billion-user milestone this morning, Mark Zuckerberg also unveiled its first-ever, agency created ad.

This premiere also served as the announcement that Wieden & Kennedy — creators of Old Spice’s “Man your man could smell like” and Nike’s “Just Do It” slogan —is the social media giant’s agency of record.

The 90-second spot, titled “The Things That Connect Us” is currently living on Facebook, is an emotional tribute that existentially discusses the things that connect people. Like chairs. “Chairs are like Facebook,” the ad states. It also says, “the universe it is vast and dark and makes us wonder if we are alone.”

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/watch-stephen-colbert-chick-fil-a-controversy-business-strategy-2012-8

Stephen Colbert discovered the true take-away from the Chick-Fil-A controversy when company president Dan Cathy “came out of the tolerance closet.” On a segment of The Colbert Report Monday, Colbert argued that it’s a brilliant new business strategy.

“I think Chick-Fil-A has stumbled on a new strategy to help struggling businesses in this down economy,” Colbert said. “Just associate your product with a divisive political position and just wait for the cash to roll in.”

Colbert added: “Hey, La-Z-Boy, why not run ads that say, ‘You know who’s lazy? Mexicans.'”

Three Mobile Video Trends To Watch

Source: https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/welcome

Video publishing platform Ooyala recently published its Q1 2012 state of online video report. The company powers videos for more than 1,000 online publishers, and collects anonymized viewing data from more than 200 million unique users per month. So it’s got a pretty good grasp on the state of online video.

Here are several important trends the report points out.

Longer videos. Viewers are watching longer videos on all devices, but especially on mobile devices. Long-form content, which they define as more than 10 minutes long, now accounts for 41 percent and 46 of time watched on smartphones and tablets, respectively.

Time Watched By Video Length And Device

Likewise, time watched per video video play increased 37 percent and 58 percent in the first quarter on smartphones and tablets, respectively:

Time Watched Per Play

Huge growth in mobile video share. Mobile video gained a huge share of overall time spent watching videos in the first quarter. Smartphones gained 41 percent, while tablets grew 32 percent.

 Engagement By Video Length

Tablets’ share of overall time spent watching videos spikes after 6 p.m., as people get home from work and begin using tablets:

Weekday Viewing Habits

Smartphones’ share of overall time spent watching video also rises in the mornings and evenings, but the increase is less dramatic than tablets. Ooyala believes mobile video is not eating into traditional television, but consumers are using them as second (or third) screens.

(Note: Ooyala uses mobile to mean smartphones.)

Smartphone Viewing Habits

High engagement on tablets. Tablets have a very high level of engagement (defined as percentage of viewers who finish 75 percent of the video). For long-form content, 30 percent of tablets viewers were engaged, just below connected TV viewers at 34 percent:

11 Facts About The World’s Changing Appetite For Luxury Watches

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/luxury-watches-global-market-2012-1

iwc watch

Luxury watches are not just functional wristwear–they’re works of art with hundreds of years of technology packed inside.

Consumers’ tastes and shopping preferences for watches are evolving around the globe.

Market research company Digital Luxury Group has just released its annual report on the worldwide market for high-end watches, looking at 15 of the world’s biggest haute timepiece brands ahead of Baselworld, the upcoming international watch and jewelry show in Switzerland.

The report is based on more than a billion consumer searches for luxury watches on search engines including Google, Bing and Baidu.

For the first time in 2011, demand for luxury watches was higher in the US than in China, based on internet search market share.

Within China, more than half of demand for luxury timepieces comes from first- and second-tier coastal cities with high-end shopping streets, like Beijing and Shanghai.

Heritage brands like Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin are more popular with traditional clients from Beijing, while IWC attracts a younger, trendier, urban audience.

Watch This Earthquake-Proof Desk Easily Shrug Off a 2,000 Pound Block [Video]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5877608/watch-this-earthquake+proof-desk-easily-shrug-off-a-2000-pound-block

I don’t live in a high risk area for deadly tremors, but after watching this earthquake-proof table easily survive having a 2,200 pound block dropped on it, I think I still want one for my office—just in case.

The table was designed by Ido Bruno and Arthur Brutter primarily for use in schools. Students are typically taught to hide under their desks in the event of an earthquake, but most desks aren’t designed to support the weight of all the debris were the building to collapse. Which is clearly demonstrated in this video when they drop just a 1,000 pound weight on a traditional desk and it’s immediately pancaked.

Watch This Earthquake-Proof Desk Easily Shrug Off a 2,000 Pound BlockIn addition to providing a safe haven for students, the desk’s supporting structure is designed in such a way that it also provides several escape routes depending on how debris has fallen. It’s also light enough to be lifted by just two students, and is built with durable but inexpensive materials so it’s actually affordable for a school to purchase en masse. Now it’s not available just yet, but based on these tests being conducted at the Structural Engineering department at Padua University in Italy, it shouldn’t have much trouble getting approved for sale.
