Here Are The Films With The Most Number 1 Weeks At The Box Office

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/movies-with-the-most-number-1-weeks-at-the-box-office-2012-4

“The Hunger Games” finally lost its winning streak atop the box office this weekend. After spending four weeks at number one, the film lands 30th on the all-time chart for most consecutive weekends at the top spot.

However, four weeks is nothing compared to other titles who have claimed victorious at the box office for five, six and seven weeks in a row. One film blows all the others out of the water with a total of 15 consecutive weekends as the box office number one. Only one film has ever had 16 weeks at number one … and it’s not a James Cameron or Ridley Scott flick.

Compare the films with the most overall number one weeks to those with the most consecutive weeks at theaters below.

You may be surprised what tops the charts.

His Charity Doesn’t Actually Donate Money

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/the-dismal-numbers-behind-kanye-wests-charity-which-doesnt-donate-money-2012-2

Last week, The Daily reported that Kanye West‘s charity spent more than a half-million dollars in 2010—but none of that money went to actual charitable causes.

After analyzing federal tax filings, the iPad newspaper found that in 2010, the Kanye West Foundation had expenditures totaling $572,383, but the majority of that went to employee salaries and other overhead expenses.

The charity didn’t even donate a single cent to an actual charity that year. And now, West’s foundation is in the process of being dissolved.

Since it’s easy to get bogged down in the numbers, Statista took The Daily’s findings and compiled information from the foundation’s tax filings to create the below infographic explaining where Kanye West’s money went and what happened to his so-called charity foundation. Complete with West’s stunner shades, obviously.

Take a look below.

How One Twitter User Broke The News Of Whitney Houston’s Death An Entire Hour Before The Press

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/how-one-twitter-user-broke-the-news-of-whitney-houstons-death-an-entire-hour-before-the-press-2012-2

When news spread Saturday night of Whitney Houston‘s passing, it was the AP who had the first official statement from Houston’s publicist confirming the singer’s death.

But an entire hour before that, Twitter user Brittany J. Pullard (aka @BarBeeBrit) was the first person to tweet the news, according to the below graph posted by Twitter, courtesy of @isaach.

@BarBeeBritt, who resides in Los Angeles and enjoys the Hollywood club scene, as evident by her Twitter feed, tweeted at 4:02pm PST to her then-799 followers:

WHitney Tweet

The tweet only received three retweets and @BarBreeBritt never revealed how exactly she heard the news, but Twitter user @AjaDiorNavy quickly had specific details of Houston’s passing at 4:15pm PST that weren’t released to the public until nearly 24 hours after the initial incident.

Twitter

Once the AP tweeted the official statement from Houston’s publicist at 4:57pm PST, rapper Lil Wayne quickly expressed his condolences and received 29,000 retweets, according to Mediabistro.

Other celebrities voiced their sympathies as well, but after Lil Wayne, the top tweets went to:

Justin Bieber (15,000 retweets): “just heard the news. so crazy. One of the GREATEST VOICES EVER just passed. RIP Whitney Houston. My prayers go out to her friends and family.”

Nicki Minaj (9,000 retweets): “Jesus Christ, not Whitney Houston. Greatest of all time,” as well as tweeting a vintage photo of the late singer alongside Michael Jackson.

Katy Perry (8,000 retweets): “So devastating. We will always love you Whitney, R.I.P.”

As if there were any doubt, it appears Twitter truly is the fastest news source. Sorry, TMZ, solid effort.

Motorola’s Releasing Intel-Powered Androids Later This Year [Intel]

Source: http://gizmodo.com/5875005/motorolas-releasing-intel+powered-androids-later-this-year

Motorola's Releasing Intel-Powered Androids Later This YearIntel’s about to get its peanut butter all over Motorola’s chocolate. And, in addition to the Reese’s Pieces, we’ll see the first Intel-powered, Android smartphone in the second half of this year.

The two companies announced today that they’ve signed on for a multi-year strategic relationship which will span multiple platforms—including tablets and phones. Specifically, Motorola hopes to employ Intel’s low power system-on-chip architecture. “With Android as the leading smartphone OS globally and advancements in computing technology we see tremendous opportunity.” Sanjay Jha, Chairman and CEO of Motorola Mobility told Business wire. Intel’s new Medfield chip could to be on-board.

And, while the phones may not end up as sleek as the Intel design reference above, with the Medfield’s ability to support up to a 24MP camera and 1080p playback, Apple may have some real competition on its hands. What’s more, given that Google owns Motorola, these phones could very well have an inside track to the latest and greatest Android OS builds. [Marketwatch]

2011’s come and gone, but Nielsen’s media report on the year remains. The latest figures from the year that was have been published, and conventional television is still riding a wave of popularity. We’re told that 290 million Statesiders are still ogling at least one television, with around one in three American homes (35.9 million for the mathematicians) owning four or more of the things. Across the wire, some 211 million Americans are online, with a staggering 116 million aged 13 and up accessing the mobile web. Other figures include 253 million DVD players owned, 162 million game consoles, 129 million DVRs and 95 million satellite subscribers. There’s also some 111 million people watching timeshifted programming, and Netflix itself has four times the average viewing time per person, per month compared to the boob tube. Concerned about mobile? Android’s US market share (again, according to Nielsen) is pegged at 43 percent, while the iPhone has 28 percent and RIM’s BlackBerry OS claims 18 percent. A Raid On A Luxury Ski Resort Has Uncovered The True Scale Of Tax Evasion In Italy

Source: http://www.businessinsider.com/italy-tax-ski-resort-2012-1

A raid by Italian tax officials on a luxury ski resort revealed dire rates of tax evasion, reports the Telegraph

Officials traced the license plates of several of the Lamborginis, Ferraris and other high-end vehicles that lined the streets of Cortina d’Ampezzo, a popular ski resort among wealthy Italians. In all, 133 vehicles were investigated; the owners of 42 of these were found to have reported annual salaries of less than $28,000 a year.

The investigators also reportedly found that hotels, restaurants and boutiques in the resort were wildly under-declaring how much income they were generating.

For example, Reuters reports that restaurants being studied by authorities were issuing sales receipts amounting to 300 percent more sales than the previous year. This demonstrated the fact that such establishments had not previously issued sales receipts in order to cut down their tax bills.

The news wire also added that tax evasion is becoming such a severe problem in Italy that the government is installing special dogs at borders, designed to sniff out bank notes with the aim of stopping people smuggling their savings abroad.
