Facebook’s Now Hiding Public Pages From Google’s Prying Eyes

Facebook's Now Hiding Public Pages From Google's Prying EyesAs The Register learned, in part of an ongoing effort to turn Facebook into its own, closed little ecosystem, Zuck’s empire has closed off public events to, well, the public. Account-holding stalkers only, please.

Once easily-accessible events listed as “public,” in addition to any other public pages, now require users to login before granting them access. It makes sense that the move comes almost directly after the Graph Search announcement, which gives Facebook users in-site access to an almost frightening wealth of information. But with it, Facebook’s vision of being an information-hoarding web within the web becomes even more imminent. [The Register]

Zuckerberg Rambling About Nothing for 30 Minutes Earned Facebook $7 BillionDo you want to know what power is? Power is going up on a stage, yammering about very little for half an hour, and boom, a few days later your company is worth nearly $7 BILLION more than it was a few days ago.

On Tuesday, Zuck took the stage at geeky strokefest TechCrunch Disrupt. He talked about ads, manically about the company’s high morale, the (obvious) disappointment of the IPO, his commitment to connecting the world, his regrets about HTML5, the importance of mobile, (obvious) denials of a Facebook Phone, and other non-statements. It was poised hot air.

“Whatever,” said people with money, and then proceeded to throw great wads of cash in the 28-year-old CEO’s direction. At the close of Friday’s trading Facebook’s value was up roughly 15 percent from where it was on Tuesday, bringing the stock’s price to $22 per share. Yes, that’s still long ways off from its (crazy) IPO price of $38 per share, but let’s put is this way: Zuck netted his company almost four million dollars per second that he spoke.

If I could do that I’d never shut up. Zuck should try releasing a crooning jazz album just to see what happens. [Reuters]

Facebook Offers starts rolling out, spamming your news feed with coupons

When Facebook first announced Offers you we’re probably wondering if there was even room for yet another coupon service. Between Google, Groupon, Yelp, Living Social and countless others we’re not entirely sure there’s a niche left untapped for Facebook, but that isn’t going to stop Zuck and crew from trying. The service is officially rolling out as we speak, and offering its wares to any business with a Facebook page, regardless of size. The hope is that it’ll catch on with smaller businesses in particular, which will now have an easy way to place deals directly into user’s news feeds. Of course, after the failure of Facebook Deals, you’d be forgiven for assuming this experiment is doomed from moment one. Check out the video after the break and the source link for more details.

A sure sign Facebook’s already in trouble – meteoric rise and meteoric fall coming

Facebook Suicide is on the rise (people leaving Facebook and not coming back)

According to SAI sources, the following exchange is between a 19-year-old Mark Zuckerberg and a friend shortly after Mark launched The Facebook in his dorm room:

Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

Zuck: Just ask.

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend’s Name]: What? How’d you manage that one?

Zuck: People just submitted it.

Zuck: I don’t know why.

Zuck: They “trust me”

Zuck: Dumb fucks.

Charlie O’Donnell: “By the time of this post is done, Diaspora, the web decentralization play from four NYU/Courant students in New York, will undoubtedly have $100,000 raised on Kickstarter.  Over and above that, it seems like they’re on a clear path towards a million dollars.  Think I’m poking the bear?  I’m dead serious.  You watch.  A week from now, they get to seven digits.  Why?  Because the ire over Facebook’s privacy issues, platform aggression, etc. is real.  If you’re concerned about Facebook, these guys are your heroes.”
